Driven by "Black Friday" prices, sales in November increased by 2.9% in comparison with October, and recorded the second biggest increase in the Monthly Survey of Trade time series, initiated in 2000. As a result, trade had a cumulative increase of 2.5% in 2018 and of 2.6% in the last 12 months. These data were released today by the IBGE.

That increase of 2.9% interrupted a series of two negative rates in a row, in a period when trade had a cumulative decrease of 1.8%. “The result of November made up for that decrease. Recovery is clear, not only due to the significant rate, but to the predominatly positive profile among the activities", says Isabella Nunes, manager of the survey.

The increase against October not only surpassed the result of January 2017, when sales increased 4% in comparison with December 2016. The result of November was the best for that month in the entire time series. In comparison with the same month a year ago, there was an increse of 4.4%, keeping the same trend as in 2017, when tere was increase of 6%.

An indicator as important as off-prices to the positive result of November was Other personal and domestic articles, which recorded an increase of 6.9% against 16.9% in relation to November 2017. The group comprises department stores, glasses shops, jewelry shops, sporting goods stores, toy stores, etc. and had its peformance bettered due to online sales. As a result, the sector had a cumulative increase of 7.3% in the last 12 months.

“The activities more influenced by the fall of prices in the Black Friday were biggest contributions to the positive result. These activities have a number of companies that nenefit from online sales, which was the focus in November. We have seen that in relation to October, but also in relation to November last year", Isabella says.

Only two activities record decrease against October

Furniture and household appliances (5.0%) and Pharmaceutical, medical and orthopedic articles (2.8%) were also benefited by reduced prices. Hypermarkets, supaermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco (1.7%), Textiles, apparel and footwear (1.7%), Fuels and lubricants (0.1%) also had positive results. Only two activities also recorded positive results aganst October: Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery articles (-1.9%) and Office, computer and communication material and equipment (-0.2%).

“The current level of sales is close to that of June 2015. It places trade at the smallest distance from the peak of the time series since then. Nevertheless, despite that significant increase, it is 5.1% below the record figure, registered in October 2014. On the other hand, it is far from the lowest figure, registered in December 2016, when we were -13.5% below the peak”.

Extended retail trade, which includes construction material and vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces, had an increase of 1.5% in November against October and of 5.8% against November 2017. The result had an important contribution from Vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces, which increased 12.8% against the same month a year ago, despite the decrease of 2.2% in relation to October.

By area, the increase of trade was widespread. Among the 27 Federation Units, 25 recorded increase in relation to October results, some highlights being Bahia (8.7%), Rondônia (8.2%), Maranhão (7.7%) and Acre (7.6% and low ones in Roraima (-0.1%) and Tocantins (-0.5). In terms of extended retail, Roraima (-1.5%) was the only one that ended November encerrou novembro with a volume fo sales below that in the previous month.
