Trade sales increased 2.9% in November

In November 2018, retail trade in the country increased 2.9% against the October figure, in the seasonally adjusted series. As a result, the quarterly moving average of the quarter ended November was 0.4%.

In the series without adjustment, against November 2017, the volume of sales of retail trade increased 4.4%. The cumulative index in the year was 2.5% in November, whereas, in the last 12 months, it was 2.6%. 

Extended retail trade, which includes the activities of Vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces and Construction material, increased 1.5% against October. the quarterly moving average changed by -0.1%.

Versus November 2017, the volume of sales of extended retail increased 5.8%, the 18th positive rate in a row. The cumulative index in the year was 5.4%, whereas the cumulative index in the last 12 months was 5.5%. The publication and the support material are available on the right. 

 

Six of the eight activities record increase from October to November

The increase of 2.9% in the volume of sales of retail trade from October to November, in the seasonally adjusted series, was followed by positive results in six of the eight activities surveyed, the main highlights being the segments Other personal and household articles (6.9%), Furniture and household appliances (5.0%) and Pharmaceuticals, medical and orthopedic articles, toiletries and cosmetics (2.8%), benefited by off-prices announced in November.

The other two positive rates were those of Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco (1.7%), Fabric, apparel and footwear (1.7%) and Fuels and lubricants (0.1%). On the other hand, Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (-1.9%) and Office, computer and communication material and equipment (-0.2%) recorded decreases.

 The volume of sales of extended retail trade increased 1.5%, but the activities of Vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces and Construction material recorded decreases, respectively, of -2.2% and -0.7%, after increasing by 0.1% and 1.1.% in the previous month.

In November 2018, against the same month a year ago, retail trade increased 4.4%, with positive rates in six of the eight activities surveyed. Other highlights were Other personal and household articles (16.9%), Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco (3.1%) and Pharmaceuticals, medical and orthopedic articles, toiletries and cosmetics (7.8%), followed by Fabric, apparel and footwear (4.8%), Furniture and household appliances (1.6%) and Office, computer and communication material and equipment (3.5%). The two activities facing decrease were Fuels and lubricants (-3.3%) and Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (-32.4%).

Extended retail trade increased 5.8% in relation to November 2017, the 18th positive rate in a row. The main contributions came from Vehicles and motorcycles, parts and pieces (12.8%), and Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco (3.1%). The segment of Construction material recorded an increase (1.4%).

The sector of Other personal and household articles, which comprises department stores, glasses shops, jewelry shops, sporting goods stores, toy stores, recorded an increase of 16.9% in relation to November 2017, mainly due to online sales and typical sales of November. The increase surpassed that of October (7.8%) and caused the cumulative index in 12 months to increase to 7.3%, against the 6.4% of October.

The segment of Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco recorded an increase of 3.1% against November 2017, the 20th positive rate in a row in this type of comparison, with acceleration against October (2.0%). Its performance has been supported by stability in the real earnings of the employed population, according to Continuous PNAD. In the last 12 months, the indicator had a cumulative increase of 4.2%, having decrease in terms of stability of September and October (4,4%).

The third biggest contribution to the retail trade rate came from Pharmaceuticals, medical and orthopedic articles, toiletries and cosmetics: an increase of 7.8% in the sales of November 2017, its 19th positive rate in a row in this type of comparison. The cumulative indicator in the last 12 months (5.9%) repeated the October rate.

The sector of Fabric, apparel and footwear increased 4.8 against November 2017, but the cumulative index in 12 months changed from -0.1% in October to -0.3% in November, and it has remained on a downwar trend since February 2018 (7.1%).

The segment of Fuels and household appliances, with an increase of 1.6% in volume of sales against November 2017, accounted for the fifth biggest impact on the overall rate and interrupted a series of four negative rates. The cumulative index in 12 months changed from 1.4%, in October, to 0.1% in November, and it has been on a downward trend since April 2018 (9.6%).

The sector of Office, computer and communication material and equipment increased 3.5% against November 2017. As a result, the decrease of the cumulative index in the year decelerated, with a change from -2.6%, in October, to -1.7%, in November.

The volume of sales of Fuels and lubricants fell by 3.3% in relation to November 2017, mainly due to the rise of prices, above the average IPCA change (inflation rate). The cumulative indicator in 12 months (-5.6%) has been negative since March 2015 (-0.3%).

Against November 2017, the segment of Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (-32.4%) faced its biggest decrease in the time series initiated in 2004. It was the fourteenth negative rate in a row, in this type of comparison. The sector has recorded decreases due to the closing of physical shops. The cumulative index in 12 months has remained negative since March 2014 (-0.2%), having changed from -10.7% in October to -13.1% in November.

Vehicles and motorcycles, parts and pieces increased 12.8% in relation to November 2017, the 19th positive rate in a row, accounting for the biggest contribution to the result of November for retail trade. The cumulative index in 12 months (15.1%) , in November, ad a slight increase against October (14.7%), and has been in a process of recovery since July 2016 (-17.8%).

With an increase of 1.4% against November 2017, the segment of Construction Material desacelated in relation to October (6.6%), in this comparison. As a result, the cumulative index in 12 months (4.3%) also decelerated against October (5.4%), and it has been on a downward trend since April 2018.

Sales increase in 25 of the 27 Federation Units

From October to November 2018, in the seasonally adjusted series, retail trade sales advanced in 25 of the 27 Federation Units, being some highlights, in terms of rate: Bahia (8.7%), Rondônia (8.2%) and Maranhão (7.7%). Decreases were observed in Tocantins (-0.5%) and Roraima (-0.1%).

Considering extended retail trade, 26 states recorded increase of sales, the main highlights being Rondônia (7.4%), Sergipe (6.4%) and Pará (6.2%). Roraima (-1.5%) recorded the only negative result in this type of comparison.
