Preliminary data from Livestock Production Statistics, released today by the IBGE, revealed that the slaughter of cattle in the country totaled 8.28 million head, a 3.6% increase between July and September 2018, compared to the same period last year. Compared to the previous quarter, the increase was 7.2%. The complete data of the survey, with information by Federation Units, will be released on December 12, 2018.

The result came mainly from the increase in exports, as the survey manager Bernardo Viscardi explains: "We can see that competitive prices in the foreign market leveraged cattle slaughter compared to the third quarter of last year." Regarding the previous quarter, Viscardi indicates that there is a recovery from the effects of the truckers' strike: "The strike brought logistic issues for the chain of slaughter and exports, which contributed to the result in this comparison."

Chicken slaughter totaled 1.42 billion head and, although it grew 3.4% compared to the previous quarter, it fell 4% in the annual comparison. The slaughter of hogs and pigs, in turn, totaled 11.52 million head, a 4.4% increase compared to the same period in 2017 and a 6.5% increase over the previous quarter. "Pork has also had a considerable increase in exports, but the volume exported was lower than that of the same quarter of 2017," adds the manager.

Egg production record for a third quarter

With an estimated volume of more than 911 million dozens, chicken egg production registered a record third quarter in the time series of the survey, which began in 1987. Compared to the previous quarter, there was an increase of 4.3% and, in the annual comparison, growth was of 8%.
