The industrial output grew in 11 out of 15 places investigated by the Monthly Industrial Survey (Regional PIM) in May, when the national index advanced 0.3%. The highest rises occurred in Amazonas (6.6%) and Mato Grosso (4.6%), though the major highlight was Paraná, which rose 3.5%. Ceará (3.2%), Goiás (3.2%), Espírito Santo (2.8%), Santa Catarina (1.6%) and Rio Grande do Sul (0.7%) also registered advances above the national average (0.3%).

Pará (-13.2%) recorded the sharpest retreat and Rio de Janeiro (-4.1%) and Pernambuco (-2.4%) completed the list with negative rates. The data were released today (8) by the IBGE.

“Positive results are very widespread in May. After retreating 4.1% in April, Paraná is the greatest positive influence on the national result. With this result, the state almost offset the loss in the previous month. The food sector was the one that mostly influenced the result of Paraná, followed by machinery and equipment, another very important sector for the state industry,” explains Bernardo Almeida, an analyst of the survey.

The second greatest influence on the national result is in the Amazonas industry, which grew 6.6%, the highest figure in absolute terms. That rise offsets the loss of 0.1% registered in April. The highlights were the industry of computer, electronic and optical products and the sector of beverages, which influenced the growth of the industrial output in Amazonas.

The third greatest influence came from São Paulo, which positively changed 0.3%, in line with the national index. Almeida explains that the poor growth had the sectors of motor vehicles and machinery and equipment as the positive influences. “That index does not offset the loss recorded in the previous month (3.6%). With the result of 0.3% between April and May, São Paulo remains 1.9% below the pre-pandemic level and 23.4% below the peak in the time series in March 2011,” highlights the analyst of the survey.

“On the negative side, Pará stood out as the major influence and the major drop (13.2%), due to the low performance of the mining sector, since the industry in Pará is slightly diversified and this sector concentrates most of the industrial activity in the state. That is the most intense negative figure for the state since March 2020, when it hit the rate of -16.0%,” analyzes Almeida.

As the quarterly moving average recorded 0.4% in regional terms, 11 out of 15 places surveyed reported positive rates. The highlights were Amazonas (2.3%), Ceará (1.9%), Rio de Janeiro (1.3%), Bahia (1.2%), Mato Grosso (1.2%), Northeast Region (1.1%) and Goiás (0.8%). On the other hand, Pará (-4.7%) registered the major loss.

In the cumulative index in the year, ten out of 15 places surveyed dropped, highlighted by Pará (-11.9%), Santa Catarina (-6.6%) and Ceará (-6.2%).

The cumulative rate in the last 12 months retreated in nine out of 15 areas surveyed. Amazonas (from 1.5% to -1.8%), Ceará (from -3.7% to -6.5%), Minas Gerais (from 4.7% to 2.0%), Espírito Santo (from 4.0% to 1.3%), Santa Catarina (from 0.1% to -2.3%), São Paulo (from -0.8% to -3.0%), Pará (from -7.6% to -9.3%) and Rio Grande do Sul (from 2.1% to 0.4%) reported the major losses between April and May 2022, whereas Bahia (from -7.0% to -3.9%) and Mato Grosso (from 8.5% to 10.6%) reported the major gains between the two periods.

More about the survey

The Regional PIM has been producing short-term indicators since the 1970s regarding the behavior of the real product from mining and quarrying and manufacturing industries. It presents, every month, indexes for 14 Federation Units, each one accounting for at least 1% of the national value of manufacturing, and also for the Northeast Region as a whole.  Amazonas, Pará, Ceará, Pernambuco, Bahia, Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Paraná, Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul, Mato Grosso, Goiás and the Northeast Region.
