In Q2 2019, the production of eggs increased by 7.2% against the same period last year and hit a record in the time series that started in 1987. That amounts to 942.45 million dozen hen's eggs, according to results from the IBGE's Statistics of Livestock Production, released by the Institute today.

The output of eggs had 62.91 million units more than in the same quarter in, also as a consequence of the increases in 22 states. São Paulo remains as the leader, with 28.9% of the national output.

Also, all the livestock activities recorded positive changes in Q2 2019, against the same period in 2018. That was not only due to the favorable prices in the foreign market but also as a result of the influence of the truck drivers' strike, last May, on the basis for comparison.

The rates were positive in terms of slaughter of cattle (3.5%), hogs and pigs (5.2%) and chickens (3.4%), and of acquisition of milk (6.9%) and rawhide (1%).

We now have a heated market due to the increase of foreign demand, mainly from China.  “The African swine fever that hit China led to the increase of demand for Brazilian meat of all kinds”, says the Livestock manager of the IBGE, Angela Lordão.

She also calls attention to the increased slaughter of heifers. “It is a new niche in the market of premium cuts, which has been better known since 2018”.

As a result, in the second quarter of 2019 a total 8.04 million head of cattle were slaughtered, about 268.55 thousand more than in the same period of 2018. A total 11.39 million hogs and pigs were slaughtered, the best figure since 1997. As for chickens, that figure was 1.42 billion head, with a hike of 3.4% against the same period in 2018.

Versus the previous month, the rates were positive for the slaughter of cattle  (1.4%) and of hogs and pigs (0.9%), besides the production of eggs (1.9%). The slaughter of chickens (-0.9%) and the acquisition of milk (-5.8%) and rawhide (-0.9%) recorded decrease in this comparison.
