How to work in an environment marked by a diversity of means and forms of communication? That is one of the challenges faced by the IBGE as it prepares for the "communication of the future", discussed in the seminar hosted by journalists Flávia Oliveira and Beth Cataldo, together with Roberto Olinto Ramos, President of the Institute, last Friday (28/09), in Rio de Janeiro.

“We have to consider communication at the lBGE in its relationship with the means of information, media and techonology. The future I see for the IBGE is a future of growing participatiom, with increased space because society urges to receive information a variety of forms", said Olinto, in the opening session of the seminar, which also marked the release of the book "Brazil on the agenda: the path of communication at the IBGE".

Flávia Oliveira spoke about the commitment of the institute towards communication, highlighting that she regards the release of results as one of the core activities of the Institute: “The IBGE is a producer of information and communication could be a secondary activity here, but when you deleiver quality content and you are engaged in that, it becomes a core-activity”.

The journalist also mentioned the current media scenario, with many sources and means to obtain information, as a challenge for the communication of the Institute. “There is great perplexity in the [journalist labor] market in relation to the time we used to be the only producers of communication. We were the bridge then, but that monolpoly is lost. Today, there is a a permanent need for renewal if you are in the news industry”.

Beth Cataldo highlighted that this multiplicity of information and sources can lead to misinformation. “We have to keep in mind that is a very complicated environment for a statistics institute. Indeed, we know there is a superabundance of information that can make people confused and out of references to reflect upon society. Then we think of the IBGE and its ability to aggregate information and different interpretation possibilities”.
