Santa Catarina was the state in which unemployment mostly increased between 2014 and 2017 (170.2%), changing from 100 thousand to 270 thousand unemployed persons. In this state, the increase was caused by the closing of job positions, mainly in Construction (-3.8%), Industry (-2%) and Services (-0.6%). The data came from the Continuous National Household Sample Survey - Quarterly Edition - PNADC, released today by the IBGE.

"Although Santa Catarina registered the lowest unemployment rate in 2017 (7.1%), it was the state that mostly suffered with unemployment over the last three years", highlights Cimar Azeredo, coordinator of Labor and Income.

Rio de Janeiro, on its turn, recorded the second highest increase in the number of unemployed persons (157%), changing from 494 thousand in 2014 to 1.2 million unemployed persons in 2017. In this state, unemployed grew due to the reduction in the job posts, mainly in Industry (-19%), Civil Construction (-13.8%) and Services (-8.4%).
