Services sector figures still negative in September

The change recorded by the services sector (-0.3%) in September, in the seasonally-adjusted series, was below July (-0.8%) and August (-1.0%) figures, as a sign of stability against the previous month.

“The decrease observed in September, 0.3% was mainly a consequence of the 1.8% decrease in Information and communication services, which has been affected by the reduced demand from consumers, especially in the case of industrialized goods. This result is not so significant and can be considered a step towards stabilization of revenue in comparison with the August figure,” says the IBGE researcher Roberto da Cruz Saldanha.

Although the results of September 2017 are still negative (-3.2%) versus those of a year ago, the cumulative change in 12 months (-4.3%) is the lowest since February 2016, pointing to a small recovery of the sector. According to Saldanha, from May 2016 to April 2017, the cumulative change remained at -5.0% nd has decreased gradually, thus confirming that slight recovery.

In the same series, the highlight was Services rendered to families (lodging and feeding), which increased 5.9% versus the result of August and by 4.6% in comparison with that of September 2016. “This increase, however, was influenced by the significant decrease recorded in August (-4.8%), leading to a more significant difference in the month-on-month comparison. August was an unusual month, in fact, and September recorded the same result of July." Saldanha points out.

The segment of Transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing (0.3%) also recorded a positive change. On the other hand, all the other segments were negative: Information and communication services (-1.8%); Professional, administrative and complementary services (-0.2%) and Other services (-0.1%).
