The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) was awarded the largest volume of resources from the relocation authorized by the Federal Government to strengthen the execution of strategic actions throughout the country. The measure was made official by the Federal Budget Secretariat (SOF), linked to the Ministry of Planning and Budget, through Ordinance SOF/MPO no. 222, published in June 2026.
Of the total of R$262.2 million reallocated in the Union's current budget, R$143.4 million was allocated to the IBGE to guarantee IBGE's census activities. The resources were reclassified to the investment category, allowing the strengthening of the infrastructure necessary to carry out surveys, including the acquisition of equipment, technologies and the improvement of data collection and treatment processes.
The president of the IBGE, Marcio Pochmann, commented on the federal relocation. “By reinforcing the resources allocated to the IBGE, the administration of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva demonstrates that it understands that the production of quality statistics and public information constitutes a strategic asset for national development, combating inequalities and strengthening the planning capacity of the Brazilian State."
The investment reinforces the strategic role of the IBGE as the main Brazilian institution in the production of statistical, geographic, cartographic, geodetic and environmental information. These data are essential for expanding knowledge about the national reality and supporting the planning, implementation and evaluation of public policies in different areas, contributing to decision-making at all levels of government.
The measure, based on current budget legislation, integrates a management process that allows adjustments between different categories of expenses without changing the total amount already approved for each program. Therefore, federal agencies can adapt the execution of resources to operational needs throughout the fiscal year, ensuring greater efficiency in the implementation of priority actions and contributing to the continuity of the IBGE's strategic activities.
