ALEPA holds Special Session in honor of IBGE's 90th anniversary

The hearing will be attended by Marcio Pochmann, president of the IBGE, Marcio Pochmann, IBGE superintendent in Pará state, Rony Helder Nogueira Cordeiro, and other authorities
The Legislative Assembly of the State of Pará (ALEPA) will host, next May 20 (Wednesday), at 2 pm, at João Batista Auditorium, a Special Session in honor of the 90th anniversary of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statisitcs (IBGE).
Founded in 1936, the IBGE was consolidated as the main Brazilian institution producing statistical, geographic, cartographic, geodetic and environmental information, fundamental for the knowledge of national reality and for the planning of public policies.
The president of the IBGE, Marcio Pochmann, stated: “The tribute paid by ALEPA for the 90th anniversary of the IBGE recognizes that knowing the Amazon in Pará with scientific rigor is a condition to defend it, plan it and ensure citizenship to its people. Celebrating the IBGE, Pará affirms that quality public information is a strategic asset of democracy and national development.”
In Pará, the Institute plays a strategic role as it portrays, with technical rigor and public commitment, social, economic, territorial and environmental role of the Amazon in Pará. The surveys provide information to governmental actions, academic surveys and initiatives by the production sector, besides contributing to the strengthening of citizenship by means of the democratization of official information.
The IBGE Superintendent in Pará, Rony Helder Nogueira Cordeiro, highlighted: "Celebrating IBGE's 90th anniversary is recognizing an essential history for Brazil. For almost a century, the Institute has produced reliable information that guides public policies, supports decisions, and helps to understand the reality of the country. More than just numbers, IBGE reveals who we are, where we are, and how we live. The Special Session will be a moment of public recognition of IBGE's trajectory and historical contribution to the state of Pará and to Brazil. The event also marks a symbolic moment for the Institute, since the IBGE Superintendency in Pará will be the first state unit in the country to hold a Special Session in honor of the institution's 90th anniversary.
Besides the Special Session at ALEPA, the state of Pará will also receive other commemorative activities of the 90th anniversary of the IBGE over 2026, integrating the national program of celebrations of th Institute.
