The Brazilian Journal of Geography (RBG) has come to its second issue of the 70th volume this Wednesday (29), bringing together 17 scientific papers, with emphasis on the Urban Climate Dossier, responsible for 12 of the published works, in addition to five articles of continuous submission. The publication marks a series of commemorative dates relevant to Brazilian geography and to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), the institution responsible for the creation and maintenance of the journal.

One of the milestones celebrated in this edition is the 90th anniversary of the IBGE, celebrated on May 29th. For almost a century, the Institute has consolidated itself as a national reference in the production and free dissemination of data and information fundamental to the Brazilian State and society. The credibility built during this period reflects the institutional commitment to the technical quality, timeliness, and consistency of statistical and geoscientific surveys, used daily by companies, governments, universities, research institutions, media outlets, and citizens throughout the country.

This edition also celebrates ten years since the resumption of the digital publication of the RBG, which began in 2016. Created in 1939, the journal played a central role in disseminating research and projects in various fields of geographic studies. In the last decade, the RBG has strengthened its role as a bridge between the IBGE and the academic and scientific community, by disseminating both the work of its technical staff and research developed by postgraduate programs throughout Brazil. This interaction has broadened the territorial reach of the journal and diversified the fields of knowledge represented, reaffirming the role of spatial analysis in understanding social and territorial dynamics.

Another highlight of this edition is the tribute to the centenary of Milton Santos' birth, celebrated on May 3, 2026. An unavoidable reference in critical geographical and social thought, the legacy of this Brazilian intellectual continues to influence IBGE projects and research. In recognition of his contribution, the Institute named the National Atlas of Brazil after him and launched the Milton Santos Dossier, whose publication is scheduled for September 2026.

Among the continuously submitted articles, the journal presents studies on topics such as Geographical Indication and the valorization of local cultures, a critical review of the work of Aziz Ab’Saber, methodological analyses of internal migrations, cartographic representations of the fragmentation of the Atlantic Forest in the State of Rio de Janeiro, and the mapping of high-altitude wetlands in the Caatinga using remote sensing. These works reinforce the thematic and methodological diversity present in the publication.

The Urban Climate Dossier brings together research dedicated to understanding heat islands, the population's perception of climate change, and the management of geo-hydrological disaster risks in Brazilian municipalities. Highlights include studies presenting new urban climate mapping tools, international systematic reviews on the spatial configuration of cities, and analyses of the institutional capacity of municipalities vulnerable to landslides and floods.
