Cattle slaughter shrinks in Q1, but slaughter of chicken, hogs and pigs grows

The slaughter of cattle fell 10.3% and that of pigs and chickens rose 4.9% and 2.4%, respectively, in the first quarter of 2021, year-over -year, according to the preliminary results of the Statistics of Livestock Production, released today (May 12) by the IBGE. The complete results for the first quarter of 2021 and for the Federation Units will be released on June 8, 2021.

According to preliminary data, the number of cattle head slaughtered in the quarter was 6.54 million, while the slaughter of hogs and pigs registered 12.53 million and that of chickens, 1.55 billion head.
In relation to the last quarter of last year, the decrease in the slaughter of cattle was even greater, -10.5%. Slaughter of hogs and pigs increased by 0.2%, while chicken slaughter remained stable in this comparison.
In the first quarter of this year, of the total slaughtered cattle, the preliminary result points to a production of 1.72 million tonnes of carcasses, a decrease of 6.8% in relation to the same period in 2020, and of 12.7% in the comparison with the last quarter of the same year.
In relation to hogs and pigs, the cumulative weight of carcasses reached 1.15 million tonnes, an increase of 7.2% compared to the first quarter of last year and 2.5% in comparison with the fourth quarter of 2020.
The weight of chicken carcasses was 3.63 million tonnes. In the annual comparison, there was an increase of 4.3%, and compared to the last quarter of 2020, the increase was 1.6%.
Egg production falls and milk acquisition increases compared to 2020
The acquisition of raw milk made by establishments that operate under municipal, state or federal sanitary inspection was 6.52 billion liters in the first quarter of 2021, an increase of 1.3% in relation to the same period of the previous year, but there was decrease of 3.3% compared to the fourth quarter of 2020.
The production of chicken eggs reached 972.94 million dozen, which corresponds to a reduction of 0.1% in the annual comparison and a drop of 1.8% in the quarter.
The survey also shows that tanneries that tan at least five thousand whole units of raw cowhide per year reported having received 7.07 million whole pieces of rawhide in the first quarter of this year. This amount was 6.6% lower compared to the same period in 2020 and 8% lower than that registered in the last quarter of last year.
