Industrial production down in nine of the 15 areas surveyed in March

Industrial production fell in nine of the 15 areas analyzed by the Monthly Survey of Industry (Regional PIM), from February to March. The result was released today (11) by the IBGE IBGE. Ceará (-15.5%), Rio Grande do Sul (-7.3%) and Bahia recorded the most significant decreases.

National production fell 2.4% in March from February, as released by the IBGE last year (5).

In Ceará, that was the most significant decrease since April 2020, when services registered a decrease of 35.2%. “That exerted a direct influence on the behavior of sectors like leather, travel articles, footwear, besides the beverages sector”, says the manager of the survey, Bernardo Almeida. Bahia recorded its third negative rate in a row, with a cumulative decrease of 22.6% in the period.

In the industry of Rio Grande do Sul, the sector of vehicles and that of other chemicals recorded the main negative impacts, leading the state to its second decrease in a row, and a cumulative loss of 9.2%. It is also the most significant decrease since April 2020 (21.4%).

According to Mr. Almeida, that behavior reflects a new phase of restriction measures due to the advance of Covid-19 in the country. “Such impact on industry is directly related to the pandemic,” he adds. Rio de Janeiro (-4.7%), Northeast Region (-4.2%) and Pernambuco (-2.8%) also registered decreases below the national average (-2.4%), whereas Mato Grosso (-2.0%), Santa Catarina (-1.0%) and Paraná (-1.0%) are also areas recording negative rates in March. 

Amazonas recorded the biggest increase (7.8%) and the main positive contribution. "After three months of negative results, and a cumulative loss of 16.6% the state recorded new increase due to the sector of other transportation equipment and the beverage industry.

São Paulo, despite the smallest increase among the six areas with positive results, accounted for the second main contribution to March, thanks to the size and national relevance of industries in the state. After recording a decrease in February, increase in March was pushed by petroleum products and vehicles . Pará (2.1%), Goiás (1.6%), Espírito Santo (1.5%), Minas Gerais (1.7%) also recorded increases.

In the month, six areas exceeded pre-pandemic levels, of February last year: Minas Gerais (11.3% higher), Santa Catarina (9.8%), São Paulo (7.1%), Paraná (6.3%), Amazonas (1.4%) and Pernambuco (0.3%).

Ten areas recorded positive results against March last year

Increase from March 2020 was of 10.5% A total of the 15 areas surveyed recorded positive results in the month, with 23 business days, one more than March last year.

Santa Catarina (36.5%), Amazonas (22.5%) and Rio Grande do Sul (21%) recorded the biggest increases. São Paulo (16.0%), Minas Gerais (12.5%) and Paraná (12.3%) also recored positive results abotambém registraramve the national average of industry (10.5%). Other areas recording increase were Ceará (9.9%), Pará (8.1%), Pernambuco (7.0%) and Goiás (0.4%).

Bahia (-18.3%) stood out as it recorded the most significant in the March 21/March 20 comparison. Rio de Janeiro (-4.8%), Northeast Region (-2.7%), Mato Grosso (-1.7%) and Espírito Santo (-1.4%) were the other areas with negative results.

About the survey

Since the 1970s, the Monthly Survey of Industry - Regional Production has produced short-term indicators about the performance of real products in mining and manufacturing industries. It presents, on a monthly basis, indexes for 14 Federation Units, whose share is, at minimum, 1% of the industrial gross value added, as well as for the Northeast Region as a whole. The survey also brings results on Amazonas, Pará, Ceará, Pernambuco, Bahia, Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Paraná, Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul, Mato Grosso, Goiás and the Northeast Region.
