Pressed by the rise in the prices of food and fuels, the inflation in November stayed at 0.89%, above that registered in October (0.86%). It was the highest figure for November since 2015, when the IPCA stayed at 1.01%. The data are from the Extended National Consumer Price Index - IPCA, released today (8) by the IBGE.

In the year, the indicators accrues a rise of 3.13% and, in 12 months, of 4.31%, above the rate of 3.92% reported in the immediately previous 12 months. In November 2019, the indicator had been 0.51%.

"The scenario looks like the same as seen over the last months, in which the group of food and beverages continues to strongly impact the result. Within this group, meat, which rose more than 6% this month, potatoes, which rose nearly 30%, and tomatoes, with a rise of 18.45%, pressed the most," explains Pedro Kislanov, manager of the survey.

Besides the above, other important food products in the households baskets also rose, like rice (6.28%) and soybean oil (9.24%). As a result, the group of food and beverages changed 2.54%. Other positive changes were beer (1.33%) and soft drink and mineral water (1.05%) consumed away from home, which dropped in October.

Having risen 1.33%, the group of transportation was the second biggest influence on the November´s index. The inflation in this group was caused by the increase in the price of gasoline (1.64%). "It was the sixth consecutive rise of gasoline and, in addition, ethanol rose 9.23%, as well as other components with high weights within transportation, as is the case of cars, either new or used," says the researcher, also highlighting the rises of voluntary insurance of vehicles and transportation by app. Together, the groups of food and beverages and transportation represented nearly 89% of the rise of the November´s IPCA.

"May was the last month with a deflation, a drop of 0.38%. We are having positive changes since June and that of November is the highest in the year. The rise in food influenced the most in the last months, which can be explained by two factors: on the one side, the demand increased, sustained by the aids granted by the government and, on the other side, the restriction of supply in the domestic market under a higher exchange rate stimulates exports," explains Kislanov.

The prices of household articles decelerated (0.86%) in relation to October, when they rose 1.53%. It was due to the drop in the prices of TV, sound and computer equipment (-1.02%), which rose 1.07% in the previous month. The rise of 0.72% of household appliances and equipment was less intense than that of October (2.38%).

The rise in the prices hit all the 16 areas surveyed by the IPCA. The highest figure was in Goiânia (1.41%), mainly impacted by the positive change of meat (9.11%) and electricity (3.69%). The lowest one was recorded in Brasília (0.35%), influenced by the drop in the prices of gasoline (-0.68%).

With the cumulative index of 4.31% in 12 months and lacking one month to close the year, the inflation, currently set at 4.0% with a tolerance range of 1.5%, is within the government target. "The cumulative index is still influenced by the strong inflation of December last year due to meat. We have to wait and see the behavior in December this year," says him.
