With 241.5 million tonnes in 2019 and 243.1 million tonnes in 2020, the two harvests surpass the previous record of 2017 (238.4 million tonnes). This information comes from the Systematic Survey of Agricultural Production - LSPA, released today (8) by the IBGE.In 2020, it increased 1.7 million tonnes (0.7%) over 2019. The analysis of the five most important products for the next harvest showed that only corn - 2nd crop registered a lower production estimate than in 2019 (10.4%). Upland cotton (2.7%), beans - 1st crop (3.3%), rice (0.9%), corn - 1st crop (1.8%) and soybeans (7.8%) recorded a positive change, being the last one a new record in the IBGE´s time series.Concerning the estimated area, upland cottonseed (7.1%,) beans - 1st crop (2.1%), soybeans (2.3%) and corn - 1st crop (1.9%) registered positive changes. Paddy rice posted a negative change of 2.1%, whereas corn - 2nd crop maintained the area of the previous year (0%).Carlos Barradas, an IBGE researcher, explains that the consecutive records happen after a crop failure in 2018, compromised by climate problems like drought and increasing temperatures faced by the states of Paraná, São Paulo, Goiás, Bahia, Minas Gerais and Mato Grosso do Sul."In 2018, soybeans retracted 3.7% in the production, 2.6% in the area and 6.2% in the average yield. In 2019, rainfall came earlier and the planting and harvesting of soybeans, the major item in the Brazilian production of grains, were anticipated As a result, the planting of corn was also anticipated, expanding the 2019 harvest. The 2020 record was due to the expansion of 7.8% in the production estimate for soybeans. Climate has helped and the average yield of soybeans rose 5.4%, with an expansion of 2.3% in the harvested area", analyzes Barradas.2019 harvest should increase 6.6%, leveraged by cornIn 2019, the national harvest should hit 241.5 million tonnes, being higher than the record in 2017 (238.4 million tonnes), producing more 3.1 million tonnes. This result represents a rise of 6.6%, above that obtained in 2018 (226.5 million tonnes), an increase of 15 million tonnes.Rice, corn and soybeans are the three main products in this group, and, together, represented 92.8% of the output estimate and accounted for 87% of the area to be harvested. In relation to 2018, the area for corn increased 7% – decline of 2.2% in corn - 1st crop and a rise of 10.9% in corn - 2nd crop –, the area for soybeans, 2.6% and the area for upland cotton, 41.9%, while the area for rice declined 9.3%.Concerning the output, soybeans decreased 3.7% and rice, 12.6%, while corn expanded 23.6% – increase of 0.9% in corn - 1st crop and of 34.1% in corn - 2nd crop – and upland cotton, 39.8%.A production of 113.5 million tonnes was obtained for soybeans. For corn, a record of 100.6 million tonnes – 26 million tonnes of corn - 1st crop and 74.6 million tonnes in corn - 2nd crop. Rice registered an output of 10.3 million tonnes and cotton, of 6.9 million tonnes, the latter also a record in the IBGE´s time series.Mato Grosso leads the national production of grains with a share of 28%, followed by Paraná (14.9%), Rio Grande do Sul (14.3%), Goiás (10%), Mato Grosso do Sul (7.9%) and Minas Gerais (6%). These states together accounted for 81.1% of the national forecast. Among the Major Regions, the volume of the production in the Central-West was of 111.5 million tonnes 46.2%), South, 77.2 million tonnes (32%), Southeast, 23.7 million tonnes (9.8%), Northeast, 19.2 million tonnes (7.9%) and North, 9.8 million tonnes (4.1%).In 2019, the area to be harvested should be 63.2 million hectares, a rise of 3.7% against the area harvested in 2018, representing an increase of 2.2 million hectares. In relation to November this year, the estimated area to be harvested rose 41.2 thousand hectares (0.1%).
