According to the data from the Monthly Industrial Survey Regional, released today by the IBGE, the industrial activity dropped in 10 out of the 15 places surveyed between May and June.  Rio de Janeiro, which fell 5.9%, and São Paulo, which retreated 2.2%, were the places that mostly influenced the drop of 0.6% in the national index.

According to Bernardo Almeida, analyst of the survey, the industry in São Paulo was negatively pressed by the sector of motor vehicles. "That sector has been volatile, reflecting the scenario. With the downturn in Argentina, which is the major market for the exports of Brazilian vehicles, it is hard to drain the production. Besides, unemployment in Brazil leads to less productivity and brings the demand down, which leads to caution in the decisions of investment and consumption", explains him.

In Rio de Janeiro, the mining and quarrying sector was the sector that mostly influenced the drop of 5.9%. "Rio de Janeiro does not have mining, so this drop is not related with the accident in Brumadinho", clarifies Almeida. "It is related to the extraction of petroleum and natural gas. The negative influence of the sector of petroleum products should also be highlighted, mainly refining", complements him.

Having risen 4.9%, Pará registered the highest growth in June as it recorded the second consecutive positive rate, a period in which it accrued a rise of 68%. These results interrupted three months of drops, which accrued a reduction of 38.6%.

"The sector of extraction of iron ore comprises 88% of the industry in Pará. We have to wait and see how the sector will behave, though it managed to reverse the cumulative drop and it maintains an upward trend", clarifies Almeida.

Having retracted 1% in the second quarter of the year, the industry maintained the negative behavior of the first quarter (-2.3%), though with a reduction in the pace of the loss.

It was reflected in nine out of the 15 places surveyed, highlighted by Amazonas (from -5% to 4.2%), Ceará (from 0.4% to 5.9%), Pernambuco (from -2.4% to 2.8%), Bahia (from -3.4% to 0.6%), Rio Grande do Sul (from 6.1% to 9.8%), Santa Catarina (from 2.9% to 6.4%) and São Paulo (from -2.7% to 0.7%).
