UN agency recognizes project on electronic census data collection in Africa

The project Reference Center Project - Electronic Data Collection was one of the top five initiatives in South-South cooperation, in the good practices award organized by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). The project, a result of a partnership between the IBGE, the Brazilian Cooperation Agency (ABC) and the UNFPA, promotes an interchange of experiences between the official statistical agencies of Brazil, Cape Verde and Senegal.
That joint initiative aims at the participation of both African countries in a strategy of multiplying the methodology of use of electronic technology in census data collection and in surveys conducted in that continent. Since 2014, there have been missions in Cape Verde and Cameroon - last year, focused on planning and sharing of experiences, and also in Indonesia - where the project was presented.
Roberto Sant’Anna, head of the IBGE International Affairs Office, states that result means the recognition of serious and competent work: “our staff is highly qualified and committed with the dissemination of innovative activities of major relevance to the development of census activities in those countries”.
According to the UNFPA representative, Vinícius Monteiro, the project contributes to the implementation and monitoring of Sustainable Development Goals (ODS). “Investing in the strengthening of statistical capacities of countries aiming at the collection, analysis, production and dissemination of data is essential to reach those objectives and build public policies that can make people's lives better”.
Voters for the award were representatives from the UNFPA Global, the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (Unicef) and the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation.
