IBGE reinforces transparency and internal control after return of in-person audits

The Internal Audit Department of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) resumed its supervision activities in the State Superintendencies after Walid Nemer Damous Sobrinho was appointed chief auditor in October 2025. This initiative also broadened direct communication with the IBGE Presidency, reinforcing alignment with the institute's strategic goals.
With the restructuring of its actions, the Internal Audit Department began to place more emphasis on compliance assessments, in line with best practices in governance, risk management, and internal controls. The new direction seeks to strengthen preventive mechanisms, ensure greater rigor to verify administrative processes, and support decision-making at all levels.
According to the president of IBGE, Marcio Pochmann, the appointment represents a step forward in strengthening control and governance practices at the Institute. "The arrival of our colleague Walid as the new chief auditor is essential for the reinforcement of transparency, excellent governance, and increased credibility in the overall quality of technical production, ensuring the proper use of public resources and the integrity of our internal processes, and, also, strengthening public confidence in IBGE's performance."
The return of compliance audits is intended to improve workflows, ensure the proper safeguarding of the Institute's material, financial, and human resources, and consolidate an institutional culture based on responsibility, integrity, and transparency.
Another point highlighted by the Internal Audit is the search for recommendations that consider the operational reality of the audited unit, which increases the feasibility of their implementation, seeking better cooperation between Internal Audit and managers.
The changes reflect the institutional commitment of the IBGE to transparency, integrity, and efficient public management.
