The current Board of Directors of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) has come forward to clarify points on its performance at the head of the country's main public survey institute, of which they took office on August 18, 2023.

In 2024, faced with an austere scenario regarding budget restraints for all public institutions, this administration focused on the need to review infrastructure expenses, mainly regarding rental expenses, which represent a high percentage of annual budget execution.

This initiative is supported by the Ministry of Management and Innovation in Public Services (MGI), as the IBGE is part of the Racionaliza Project for optimized and shared occupation of properties belonging to the direct, autonomous and foundational federal public administration, which allows the improvement of working conditions and the recovery of buildings belonging to the IBGE.

Another urgency considered in view of the restrictive budgetary situation was supported by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI), with the recognition of IBGE as a Science and Technology Institution. The Ministry of Planning and Budget approved the legal constitution of a new public foundation, the IBGE+ Foundation within the IBGE. The Statute of the IBGE+ Foundation has been recently presented to the IBGE Board of Directors, as well as the structure of its Fiscal Council and Board of Trustees, the latter with provision for an internal voting process by a representative of the institution's employees.

It is also worth pointing out, in line with the MGI, which conducts the main public competition in the IBGE's 88-year history, the need for all IBGE civil servants to be in person at the institution twice a week, engaged in the welcoming, guidance and integration of all the new employees approved in this competitive examination. The partial return to in person activities also aims at the effective participation of the staff in fulfilling the Annual Work Plan, a commitment made with the MPO and which includes new and unprecedented surveys allowing the fulfillment of IBGE's institutional mission: portraying Brazil with information necessary for the knowledge of its reality and the exercise of citizenship.

Last but not least, the regular democratic meetings with the IBGE national union that have been held in these thirteen months of our administration, with undeniable support from the Institute's current board of directors to the historical demands of employees and represented by the union, has led us to achieve, for example, the recovery of salaries for permanent and temporary employees. In this respect, we mention the transparent and participatory implementation of two unprecedented annual meetings with civil servants to define the guidelines of the IBGE 90 years project and the construction of the National System of Geosciences, Statistics and Data (SINGED), as established by the National Conference of Data Producers and Users in July 2024.

Marcio Pochmann
President of the IBGE
