Hack-a-thon will be held on 6–8 December and gather youth from all over the world

A hack-a-thon organized by the UN is open for subscriptions up to Nov 06. In this event, youth from all over the world will show their abilities in data science.

With this international initiative, the United Nations Statistical Division (UNSD) intends to promote data science applications aimed at fulfilling the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).

The project has been conceived by the United Nations Major Group for Children and Youth (MGCY), in partnership with the United Nations Statistical Division (UNSD) and with the support from the UN Global Platform Regional Hub in Brazil, in China, in Rwanda and in the United Arab Emirates.

In the Latin America and Caribbean, the initiative has been sponsored by the UN Global Platform Regional Hub in Brazil, headquartered in the IBGE’s National School of Statistical Sciences (ENCE). One can sign up for the event at: https://input.un.org/EFM/se/3995D1A444ABF60D

The hack-a-thon theme

This online hack-a-thon will take place from December 6th to 8th.

The idea is to foster the creation of solutions related to the SDG, by coming up with proposals and tools to monitor the SDG. An even more challenging possibility would be finding solutions that help countries implement the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda in their territories.

The theme will be disclosed by the middle of November and the works will be evaluated by MGCY experts.

Results are expected to be released on December 15. The winners will be invited to participate in the Global Conference on Big Data, in Oman, or in the Expo 2020, to be held in Dubai between October 2021 and March 2022.

Target public

The target public is formed by students and professionals up to 32 years of age, grouped in teams with 3 to 5 members.

Regional Hub in Brazil

This is the first activity conducted by the UN Global Platform Regional Hub in Brazil. The objective of the Hub is to foster cooperation between statistical institutes in Latin America and in the Caribbean, in order to contribute to the advance of Big Data and Data Science use in the modernization and production of official statistics in these territories, by sharing knowledge and the development of innovative initiatives in the region

Headquartered and managed by ENCE, the Hub Regionalwas made official by means of a memorandum of understanding between IBGE and UNSD, in April 2021. For more information, email-us at: ungphub@ibge.gov.br.
