Cattle slaughter increases 4%, surpasses 8 million head in Q3

Cattle slaughter hit 8.35 million head in the third quarter this year, an increase of 4% over the previous quarter, when 8.08 million animals were slaughtered for consumption. According to the first results of the Livestock Statistics, released today by the IBGE, cattle slaughter registered a positive change of 0.5% compared with the third quarter of 2018.

The survey also points out a rise in the hogs and pigs and chicken slaughter. 11.67 million hogs and pigs head were slaughtered in the quarter ended in September, an increase of 2.4% against the second quarter of the year. The increase was of 0.8% in relation to the same quarter in 2018. Chicken slaughter rose 3.3% compared with the second quarter this year. 1.47 billion chicken were slaughtered. This figure is 3.1% higher than that recorded in the third quarter a year ago.

The acquisition of raw milk and the production of hen eggs closed the third quarter this year with an increase. The establishments under some kind of sanitary inspection – either federal, state or municipal – purchased 6.29 billion liters of milk, which corresponds to an increase of 6.9% compared with the volume registered in the second quarter this year. The rise was of 0.5% in relation to the third quarter of 2018.

The production of hen eggs was of 956.62 million dozens in the third quarter of 2019. This result represented an increase of 1.5% compared with the previous quarter and of 3.4% in relation to the same quarter in 2018.

The preliminary data of the Quarterly Survey of Leather point out that the tanning houses that work with at least 5 thousand whole pieces of cattle raw hide per year received 8.44 million pieces in the third quarter of 2019. This quantity was 0.6% higher than the one registered in the previous quarter. Nevertheless, the survey points out a drop of 7.4% compared with the third quarter of 2018.

The definitive results by state of the Livestock Statistics will be released on December 12.
