Previous inflation stays at 0.30%, lowest rate for January since 1995

The previous inflation stayed at 0.30% in January, the lowest rate for January since the implementation of the Real Plan in July 1994, whereas the cumulative index over the last 12 months stood at 3.77%. The rate was 0.39% compared with January 2018. The information is from the Extended National Consumer Price Index 15 - IPCA-15, released today by the IBGE.

The highest change was registered in the Food and beverages group (0.87%), also responsible for the biggest impact (0.22 percentage points) on the index. Transportation and Wearing apparel, on their turn, recorded a deflation of 0.47% and 0.16% in this period, respectively. Other six groups complete the list: Communication (0.06%), Housing (0.08%), Education (0.31%), Personal expenses (0.43%), Household articles (0.58%) and Health and personal care (0.68%).

The major responsible for the rise in Food and beverages was the group of food at home (1.07%), influenced by the rising prices of fruits (6.52%), meat (1.72%), onions (17.50%) and potatoes (11.27%). On the other hand, food away from home slightly decelerated from 0.58% in December to 0.53% in January.

Transportation posted the biggest drop among the groups surveyed (0.47%), though less intense than that of December (-0.93%). Gasoline (-2.73%) fell for the second consecutive month and exerted the biggest individual impact on the index (-0,12 p.p.). The prices of ethanol (-1.17%) and diesel fuel (-3.43%) also dropped, contributing to the result of -2.4% in Fuels. Having risen 29.61% in December, the prices of airfare also dropped (-3.94%).

Responsible for strong rises in the group of Housing (0.08%) in previous months, electricity (-0.73%) fell for the fourth consecutive month, though less intensely than in December (-3.61%). Conversely, the group of Health and personal care (0.68%) exerted the second biggest positive impact on the month´s index (0.08 p.p.), highlighted by the items of personal hygiene, which increased 2.23% in January.

In terms of locality, only the metropolitan area of Curitiba (-0.08%) registered a deflation, at a great extent, due to the drops in gasoline (-3.55%) and electricity (-1.39%).  On the other hand, the highest index was recorded in the metropolitan area of Salvador (0.80%), due to rise of fruits (10.10%) and meat (4.60%).
