Even with the increase of four out of the five activities surveyed, the services sector remained stable (0.0%) in the comparison between November and October, completing the second consecutive month in this situation.

The data are from the Monthly Survey of Services - PMS, released today by the IBGE, which also registered the stability of the cumulative rate over the last 12 months, ending a series of 41 months of negative rates in this indicator.

According to Rodrigo Lobo, manager of the survey, the sector is not used to be so volatile as it was in the months right after the truckers´ strike. "Now the sector is 0.2% above April, before the strike, and 0.3% below December 2017. In spite of all the turmoil of the strike, it is like this part of the economy did not move in relation to the end of last year", explains him.

Only the group of Other services ended November with a negative change over October (-0.2%), whereas the others remained positive: Services rendered to families (0.4%), Information and communication services (0.8%), Transportation services (0.3%) and Professional, administrative and complementary services (0.1%).

The major impact came from Information and communication services, which accrued a rise of 1.4% over the last three months. "This month, in particular, the activity was leveraged by the edition integrated with printing of books, which increased the production of teaching material for 2019. The segment of telecommunication also exerted a positive pressure", says Lobo.

The second positive impact came from transportation, which changed 0.3% and did not recover the cumulative loss of the last two months (0.9%). Such growth was sustained by the storage of goods, influenced by Black Friday, and by air transportation of passengers, complemented the survey´s manager.

In regional terms, most places closed November with a performance below that of October. Of the 27 Federation Units, 20 dropped, though they were offset, at a great extent, by the growth of 0.7% in São Paulo. These states also closed November with positive figures: Ceará (0.2%), Pará (1.1%), Amapá (1.5%), Santa Catarina (1.6%), Mato Grosso (2.3%) and Roraima (4.9%).

"São Paulo, which is on the positive side, managed to pull the services sector to the stability when negative changes prevail in other states. This happens because São Paulo has 43% of the sector. For example, Rio de Janeiro fell (-2.4%), yet it has only about 15%", explains the survey´s manager.

Compared with November 2017, the services sector rose 0.9% in the same month of 2018. Of the five activities, only Professional, administrative and complementary services (-1.1%) posted a negative performance. On the other hand, the activities responsible for the positive result were Services rendered to families (3.1%), Information and communication services (1.2%), Transportation services (0.6%) and Other services (3.7%).
