IBGE Ecological Reserve: a live laboratory in the Cerrado

September 22, 2017 02h04 PM | Last Updated: September 22, 2017 02h04 PM

IBGE researchers, in partnership with scientists from Brazil and abroad, use the IBGE´s Ecological Reserve - Recor to develop studies in order to understand how the Cerrado works with a minimum human intervention.  The outcomes are compared with similar works made in areas of the same biome, but that were transformed by, for example, agriculture, reforestation and construction of dams. The data produced in these comparisons are used as subsidies for public policies aiming at development and preservation.

Mauro Lambert, IBGE researcher and manager of the Reserve created in 1975, tells the story of this environmental conservation unit in the video below. To know more about Recor, check the story in this month´s edition of the Retratos Magazine.
