Extended retail sales interrupt sequence of 35 negative rates

In the comparison with May 2016, the sales of the extended retail, which include the sectors of cars and construction material, grew 4.5%, interrupting a sequence of 35 negative rates in a row in this comparison. According to Isabella Nunes Pereira, IBGE researcher, this performance was influenced by the sales of care, which in May 2017 recorded increase of 4.5%, after a sequence of 38 months of negative rates for the activity.

It is worth mentioning that in May there is the Mother's Day celebration, which is a date when the retail trade historically achieves positive rates. However, Isabella claims that due to the crises, in the last two years in May retailers have recorded drops (of 4.5% in 2015 and of 9.0% in 2016):

"In 2017, May registered an increase of 2.4%, therefore this result is the best one for the month in the last three years. Nevertheless, the influence of Mother's Day in May 2017 must not be overestimated: there is a low comparison base [the year of 2016] and the influence of the calendar effect, since May 2017 [22 days] had one workday less than May 2016 [21 days]".

Over May 2016, five activities presented positive performances

The highlight belongs to the activity group with the sales influenced by Mother's Day: furniture and household appliances (13.8%); fabric, apparel and footwear (5.0%); other articles of personal and domestic use (2.6%); pharmaceutical and medical goods, cosmetic and toiletries (3.8%); office, computer and communication equipment and material (8.8%).
