The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) will present, on June 26, at 9 am, a seminar on the final test of the Survey on Impacts of the Floods of 2024 on the population’s quality of life in Rio Grande do Sul, to be collected in the second semester of 2025. The event will take place at the auditorium of the Intermunicipal Services Consortium of the Vale do Rio Pardo Area (CISVALE), in Santa Cruz do Sul (RS), and it will also be streamed live on the lo IBGE Portal.
The objective of the seminar is to present the data collection methodology, the topics approached in the questionnaire and the bibliographical review based on which the survey on developed. The proposal of the survey was one of the actions of Singed-Lab, IBGE’s Innovation Lab, established as part of the task force created by the Presidency of the Republic to deal with the natural disaster.
"Soon after the serious natural disaster that swept through the state of Rio Grande do Sul, the IBGE made the commitment of providing urgent and necessary information to meet the needs presented then. Simultaneously, the Institute constituted a multidisciplinary team connected to the Innovation Laboratory that is consistent with the advance of Singed. One of the results was the preparation of a survey on the impacts of floods on the quality of living of the population in Rio Grande do Sul, now made public,” explained Marcio Pochmann, president of the IBGE.
Formed by a multidisciplinary team, Singed Lab has the objective of creating a welcoming environment for experimentation, generation of new ideas and projects, by means of the use of technology combined with technical, statistical, geoscientific information and data produced by the Institute and centralized in the National System of Geosciences, Statistics and Data (SINGED).
“This project represents an unprecedented step in the IBGE history, as it inaugurates an approach to the social and economic impacts resulting from natural disasters. The flood that swept through Rio Grande do Sul in 2024 evidenced the urgent need of precise and contextualized data to guide effective public policies during crises. With this first survey aimed at the population’ quality of life, the IBGE established a methodological bases that can guide future studies all over the country, thus contributing to a faster, more efficient and sensitive action before extreme events,” said the director of Surveys, Gustavo Junger.
