The Legislative Assembly of Sergipe (Alese) held a special session this Friday (22), in the plenary of the Governor João Alves Filho Palace, in honor of the 90th anniversary of the IBGE. The ceremony, presided over by Deputy Georgeo Passos (Republicanos Party), was attended by the president of the IBGE, Marcio Pochmann; the superintendent of the IBGE in Sergipe, Fabio Albuquerque; Maria Ozana de Souza, representative of retired servants; Cezar Oliveira Freitas, representative of permanent servants; and Hana Gomes de Mesquita, representative of contracted servants.
Hana Mesquita highlighted IBGE's institutional mission of portraying Brazil with the information necessary for understanding its reality and exercising citizenship. “And if the portrait to be appreciated today were of the IBGE itself, what would we see? I believe we would see the eyes of those who grasp Brazil in all its beauty and grace, but also in its raw, everyday form, not just in numbers and statistics. The ears of those who listen, through each of the surveys, to the complaints and struggles of the Brazilian people. The hands are the same ones that greet, register, collect, and bring to the IBGE one of its most valuable inputs: the raw information that will be transformed into statistical data, which will reach the knowledge of society, the academic community, and the hands of those who decide on public policies.”

Maria Ozana, representing retired servants, celebrated the work of the IBGE. “Each piece of data collected, each survey conducted, each census was carried out with dedication, responsibility, and above all, with love for our country. There were many challenges along the way. We have faced technological changes, traveled through cities, fields, and distant communities, often in difficult conditions, but always with the certainty that our work was essential for the development of Brazil. Looking at the present, we glad to see that the IBGE remains strong, modern, reinventing itself and maintaining its mission of portraying Brazil with seriousness and excellence.”
Cézar Oliveira, representing permanent servants, highlighted the Institute's commitment. “Celebrating IBGE’s 90th anniversary is recognizing the history of an organization that has helped build and portray Brazil. An institution that, over nine decades, has been producing essential information to understand our population, our economy, our territory, and our social transformation. Behind every piece of data, research, and statistical survey, there is a profound commitment to truth, to science, and to the public interest. No nation can plan its future without knowing itself, and for 90 years the IBGE has fulfilled exactly this mission: to help Brazil and to know Brazil.”

IBGE's superintendent in Sergipe, Fábio Albuquerque, said that talking about the IBGE is talking about Brazil and about being Brazilian. "The IBGE is the largest producer of data in our nation, it knows every inch of our land and, during our population censuses, it travels to every corner of Brazil. It is thanks to the IBGE that we know the real needs of our people, we know how many we are, where we are and how we live, talking daily with hundreds of people through all our surveys."

Following the participants' tributes, the president of the IBGE, Marcio Pochmann, pointed out how the Institution is preparing to take a very important step to meet the demands of society. “[These] demands stem from the institution's planning for 2026 to 2032, because we face enormous challenges in not only carrying out the traditional work that the IBGE performs, but also expanding with new investigations. In addition to the Census of Agriculture, Forestry and Aquaculture, we also have the Census of the Population Experiencing Homelessness, which is an unprecedented census; there is no international experience to support us. We ourselves have to build the appropriate methodology. We also have the challenge of conducting a Census of the population of Brazilians who do not reside in Brazil, a new phenomenon that has been growing. We celebrate the anniversary of a mature institution, an institution that recognizes its past and, above all, its servants,” highlighted the president.
Finally, Congressman Georgeo Passos (Republicanos Party) highlighted IBGE's role in producing statistical and geoscientific data. "We are happy to be here honoring an institution with history and credibility, especially nowadays, when different sources of data and information circulate on social media without, often, being true. We know that when we receive data from the IBGE, we have a stamp of trust and credibility. Above all, today the IBGE holds the mission of, once again, fulfilling its role. Hana Mesquita cited the [IBGE] servants as eyes and feet, and I would add: ears and heart."
