The UN Big Data Regional Hub is offering a series of webinars on the production of climate change indicators. The next seminar will be on March 19, at 11 am, and will discuss Artificial Intelligence (AI), big data and Geographic Information System (GIS).

Registration is free and open. In order to participate, candidates should register at:  https://hub.ibge.gov.br/index_port.htm. The event will be broadcast in Spanish. ENCE undergraduate students will have the hours automatically counted as complementary activities in the system, as long as they identify themselves with their full name and institutional number at registration and attend the event till the end.

The event's lecturers are Pedro Coura and Caio Riebold, both from Esri (Environmental Systems Research Institute). They will share examples of applications that combine artificial intelligence and big data with GIS thecnology, with emphasis on climate change and available data for their analysis.

Statistical offices are combining geospatial intelligence and data science  with artificial intelligence to automatize tasks, make accurate business previews and obtain insights from great data volumes. GIS allows users to better understand complex issues related to the environment, logistics, social and economic themes.

Pedro Coura is a geographer with a master's and PhD degrees in Environmental Management and GIS. He has over 15 years of experience in the GIS market and has worked at Esri for three years as Business Development Manager for the Americas.

Caio Riebold holds a degree in Geography from the UnB. He joined Esri in 2022 and is a Solutions Engineer for National Governments and Defense for the Americas. He has also worked for the Brazilian Army processing SAR images of the Amazon region and on Cartographic Engineering projects.

Series on climate change indicators

The Big Data Regional Hub is offering a series of webinars to share experiences in the use of new data sources and technologies for climate change mitigation. Topics such as biodiversity, tourism sustainability, and integration of geospatial information for land use monitoring are covered. The sessions are in Spanish or English, with the participation of experts from Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as from other regions.

The series kicked off in September 2024 with a webinar on climate change and disaster metrics. The October webinar addressed new data sources for measuring tourism sustainability. The November webinar addressed hydrogeological disaster alerts. And the February 2025 webinar was on remote sensing. The four events brought together 477 participants from 26 countries: Argentina, Aruba, Belize, Bangladesh, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Slovenia, Guatemala, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, the Netherlands, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, the Dominican Republic, Trinidad and Tobago, Uruguay, and Venezuela. Recordings are available on the Hub page. The series will continue with monthly webinars through July 2025.

Resulting from a partnership between the IBGE and the UN Statistics Division, the UN Regional Hub for Big Data in Brazil (https://hub.ibge.gov.br) was launched in November 2021 at the 11th Statistical Conference of the Americas, held by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC). The Hub is hosted by the National School of Statistical Sciences (ENCE), academic arm of the IBGE, which coordinates the efforts and contributions of the different areas of the Institute in supporting the activities of the Regional Hub.

The project aims at contributing to the development of the use of big data to improve the production of official statistics, promoting knowledge sharing and the development of innovative initiatives in Latin America and the Caribbean. In addition to Brazil, four other countries are also part of the initiative as hosts of regional or global hubs: the United Arab Emirates, Indonesia, Rwanda, and China.
