In a video message, the President of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), Marcio Pochmann, reviewed 2024 and pointed out perspectives to 2025.
Read below Marcio Pochmann´s complete talk.
"Hello IBGEans,
The year of 2024 is finishing and we have a very positive balance of what happened in the institution. Beginning with the year of 2024, with the conclusion of an integrated and articulated work plan for the institution at national level. It was followed by the continuity of the selection process of our Superintendents. Early in May we carried out the Second National Meeting of Officers, key to establishing the basis for the National System of Geosciences, Statistics and Data. It was taken to the National Conference of Data Producers and Users in July, at the University of the State of Rio de Janeiro, a key moment to articulate and open the IBGE to the Brazilian society, especially the epistemic community, which deals with data processing in statistics and geography.
We also advanced in the year of 2024, carrying out events with the heads of the G20 national statistical offices, since it was the year that Brazil led the G20. We had remarkable meetings with the data producer community in the entire world, in the United Nations Statistical Commission, in the European Statistical Commission, the Eurostat, in the ECLAC´s Statistical Commission, in Latin America, in the Statistical Commission of the Portuguese Speaking Countries, in the Statistical Commission of the BRICS Countries, an important step towards the upturn of the IBGE in the international scenario.
It is important to remind you that, despite the difficulties we faced in 2024, the IBGE advanced by establishing a salary adjustment in 2025 and 2026 and, still in 2024, a significant adjustment in the salaries of our Municipal Survey Agents. Congratulations on this achievement!
It is also important not to forget that the IBGE resumed some surveys in 2024, as the case of the Consumer Expenditure Survey (POF), which started in November 2024. All of this shows the importance of what occurred in 2024, especially the achievements, which also include several events with society, providing an extremely positive balance concerning the presence of the IBGE in Brazil and in the world. The number of events produced by the IBGE and the amount of information provided by the IBGE News Agency highlight the prominence of our institution.
Challenges are even greater for the year of 2025, and we count on the support and cooperation of the talented team that the IBGE is. We are nearly eleven thousand officers, distributed along 566 branches and 27 superintendencies and six directorates. Because we are about to enter 2025 with our second integrated work plan, which will anticipate this year in terms of budget and activities. We are preparing the third meeting of IBGE´s officers in May, which should discuss the multi-annual work plan and surveys to be accomplished up to 2030. In July, we will have the National Conference of Data Producers and Users, which will establish the General Plan of Statistical and Geoscientific Information and Data, the first one since 1974 to be presented and discussed with society. The IBGE will also lead the BRICS national statistical offices, since Brazil will lead the BRICS in 2025. We have another important task in leading the Mercosur countries, in terms of Statistical Commissions and COP 2025 as well.
This is the plan we have, and I would like to share and thank once again everyone that helped to build an even stronger IBGE.
A good year of 2025 to everyone. See you there"!
