Slaughter of cattle, hogs, pigs and chicken grows in Q1 2023

Chicken slaughter rose 4.8%, cattle slaughter grew 4.7% and that of hogs and pigs rose 3.5% in the 1st quarter of 2023, compared to the same period of the previous year, according to preliminary results of the Statistics of Livestock Production, released today (11) by the IBGE. Compared to the 4th quarter of last year, chicken slaughter grew by 2.2%, that of hogs and pigs, by 1.8%, but cattle slaughter fell by 2.4%.

The complete results and data for the Federation Units will be released on June 6.

According to preliminary data, the number of cattle slaughtered in the quarter was 7.32 million, while hogs and pigs slaughtered were 14.14 million and chickens, 1.60 billion head.

Of the total number of cattle slaughtered, the preliminary result points to a production of 1.90 million metric tons of carcasses, an increase of 3.0% compared to the same period in 2022, but a reduction of 6.5% compared to the last quarter of the last year. With regard to hogs and pigs, the cumulative weight of carcasses reached 1.29 million metric tons in the 1st quarter of 2023, up 3.5% compared to the 1st quarter of 2022 and an increase of 1.3% compared to the 4th quarter of the same year.

The cumulative weight of chicken carcasses was 3.43 million metric tons in the 1st quarter of 2023, an increase of 6.4% compared to the 1st quarter of 2022 and an increase of 3.1% compared to the previous quarter.

The acquisition of raw milk made by establishments that operate under municipal, state or federal health inspection was 5.85 billion liters. There was a reduction of 1.5% compared to the 1st quarter of 2022 and a decrease of 7.0% compared to that obtained in the previous quarter.

The production of hen eggs reached 1.02 billion dozen in the 1st quarter of 2023. The result corresponds to an increase of 2.8% compared to the same period of the previous year and a reduction of 1.9% compared to the 4th quarter of 2022.

The survey also shows that tanneries tanning at least five thousand whole units of bovine rawhide per year declared having received 7.59 million whole pieces of rawhide in the 1st quarter of 2023. This amount represents an increase of 6.4% compared to that recorded in the 1st quarter of 2022 and a decrease of 0.4% compared to the previous quarter.
