The Extended National Consumer Price Index (IPCA) for January was 0.53%, the fourth month in a row with an increase. In the last 12 months, the cumulative inflation is 5.77%. The data were disclosed today (February 9) by the IBGE.

The Food and beverages group (0.59%) had the greatest positive impact on the overall index, contributing with 0.13 percentage points (pp), with great influence from the subitems potatoes (14.14%) and carrots ( 17.55%). “The increases in these two cases are explained by the large amount of rain in the producing regions. On the other hand, we observed a drop of 22.68% in the price of onions, due to the greater supply coming from the Northeast and South Regions. This food item that had an increase of more than 130% in 2022”, explains the research manager, Pedro Kislanov.

The transportation group (0.55%) exerted the second largest positive impact on the general index, contributing with 0.11 pp in January, with fuel registering an increase of 0.68%. “In transportation, the highlights were gasoline, up 0.83%, registration and licensing, which for the first time incorporated the share referring to the 2023 IPVA, up 1.60%, and new cars, with increase of 0.83%”, clarifies Mr. Kislanov.

There was deceleration in the Health and personal care group (from 1.60% in December to 0.16% in January). The survey manager points out that the item that most impacted this result was personal hygiene, with a decrease of 1.26%: “This result is explained by the drop in the prices of perfumes and make-up items. We observed a drop in November in the Black Friday, an increase shortly after, in December, and, in January, a new drop with discounts being verified in the sector”.

Of the nine groups of products and services surveyed, only Wearing apparel had a negative change (-0.27%). “It should be noted that it was the first drop in the group after 23 straight months of increases, with the last retraction having been registered in January 2021. The decrease in January 2023 is due to the fact that several stores have applied discounts on the prices that were practiced in December, for Christmas. The factor that most influenced the result was a drop of 1.37% in women's apparel”, contextualizes Mr. Kislanov.

Communication (2.09%) was the group that recorded the biggest change in January, driven by the increase in the subitems pay-TV (11.78%) and TV, Internet and phone bundles (3.24%), which jointly contributed with 0.09 pp to the January IPCA. “The result of the Communication group is mainly explained by the increase in TV, Internet and phone bundles. This also ends up impacting the separate pay-TV and internet plans, which also increased”, clarifies the survey manager.

The Housing group registered an increase of 0.33%, with a highlight to water and sewage fees (1.44%), due to the rises that took place in three areas: Belo Horizonte (12.73%): increase of 14.62 %, from January 1st; Brasília (8.29%): increase of 9.51%, effective since January 1st; and Campo Grande (5.56%): increase of 6.89%, in force since January 3rd.
