The work will be available in print and in digital format as an e-book

Today (Aug 30) the IBGE launches the book As estatísticas nas comemorações da Independência do Brasil (Statistics in Brazil's Independence Celebrations) in a ceremony at the National Library in Rio de Janeiro. The volume is an original work of the researcher and retired professor from the National School of Statistical Sciences (ENCE), Mr. Nelson de Castro Senra, in celebration of the Bicentennial of the Independence of Brazil. It addresses the relationship between the development of the national statistical system and the country formation as a modern national state.

The ceremony starts at 3 pm with an opening cocktail and the official launch takes place at 4 pm with YouTube live streaming on the IBGE and National Library Foundation channels. The event will be attended by the President of the IBGE, Mr. Eduardo Rios Neto, and by the President of the National Library, Mr. Luiz Carlos Ramiro Jr.

“The guiding thought since the beginning was to insert the IBGE in the celebrations of the Bicentennial of the Independence of Brazil. Thinking of that, soon enough I realized that we could also highlight the presence of statistics in the major dates. And that is how the book gained its structure”, explains Mr. Senra about the way the book was conceived.

“It shows the relevance of statistics and geosciences to policy-making and to private business management. It shows that the statistical institution lives in close relationship with society’s wishes, as the State body it indeed is,” adds the author about the importance of the topic.

The work organized by Mr. Senra has, along its 258 pages, the collaboration of historians, economists, sociologists and social scientists, who joined their knowledge to trace back the statistical and cartographic activities throughout the history of Brazil from 1822 until the present day. Mr. Eduardo Rios Neto, one of the collaborators, wrote the Introduction, whereas the preface was upon the sociologist and political scientist, Mr. Simon Schwartzman.

“The book is the starting point of a series of activities thought by the IBGE to celebrate the Bicentennial of the Independence of Brazil”, explains Mr. Rios Neto. “In due time, we will launch an almanac of the Brazilian censuses and inaugurate a permanent section on the IBGE website dedicated to the two hundred years of the Independence for lay people”, complements the president of the IBGE.

The publication is divided into four sections that cover half century each. Those sections are separated in two parts, one addressing Brazil as a whole and the other accounting for the history of public statistics, which has been, since 1930 , the history of the IBGE. The author travels around the fiftieth anniversary, centenary and sesquicentennial to show how each one of those celebrations are a milestone in the national history and compares the current period corresponding to the bicentennial, showing how the statistical bodies worked in those occasions.

The volume brings important historic landmarks in relation to the Census and to the IBGE, as the first National Census in 1872, the enumeration of 1970, onto the IBGE, considered renewed in method and technique, up to the 2022 Census, presenting the challenges of the present times.

The book also brings attached demographic data collected in al censuses, News related to the operation and the basic and sample questionnaires of the 2022 Census, as well as the legislation which defines the IBGE as the coordinator of the National Statistical System.

The physical book will be sold at the IBGE virtual shop. It is also available for free download as an e-book on the IBGE Library.
