Inflation preview stayed at 0.43% in April, 0.21 percentage points (p.p.) lower than that of March, when it had risen 0.64%. The result was mostly influenced by the groups of Food and beverages (1.14%) and Health and personal care (0.96%). Together, the two groups correspond to 88% of the month's index. The Extended National Consumer Price Index-15 (IPCA-15) was released today (25) by the IBGE.
The cumulative index in the year stayed at 2.43%, whereas the cumulative index over the last 12 months stood at 5.49%. The index had registered 0.21% in April 2024.
Eight out of nine groups of products and services surveyed recorded positive figures, highlighted by Food and beverages, with the highest change (1.14%) and biggest impact (0.25 p.p.) and Health and personal care (0.96% and 0.13 p.p.). The group of Transportation (-0.44% and -0.09 p.p.) was the only negative change in April.
Food at home accelerated from 1.25% in March to 1.29% in April. the rises in tomatoes (32.67%), ground coffee (6.73%) and long-life milk (2.44%) contributed to that result. On the other hand, food away from home (0.775) accelerated in relation to March (0.66%), due to the rise in snacks (1.23%) and meals (0.50%).
In addition to Food and beverages, the group of Health and personal care (0.96% and 0.13 p.p.) also exerted a strong influence on the overall index, with the contribution of items personal hygiene (1.51%), pharmaceuticals (1.04%), after the authorization of the adjustment of up to 5.09% in the prices of medicines on March 31, and health insurance plans (0.57%).
Drop in airfare was the major negative influence in April
In the group of Transportation (-0.44%), the only one with a negative result this month, the major influence came from airfare, with a drop of 14.38% and influence of -0.11 p.p.). on the overall index. Fuel (-0.38%), with a negative change in the prices of ethanol (0.95%), vehicular gas (0.71%), diesel fuel (0.64%) and gasoline (0.29%), contributed to that result as well.
Inter-city bus (0.39%) was adjusted in Rio de Janeiro (5.62%) on March 29. In addition to the adjustment of 5.33% in the fare in Rio de Janeiro (0.53%), the result of subway (-0.95%) takes into account the zero fare on Sundays and holidays in Brasília (-14.36%), in force since March 1st.
Taxi also rose (0.57%), due to the average adjustment of 10.91% in Porto Alegre (5.84%) on March 31, and urban bus dropped (0.51%), due to the zero fare on Sundays and holidays in Brasília (-14.36%) in force since March 1st; to the adjustment of 4.17% in Porto Alegre (2.29%) on March 31; and to the adjustment of 15.00% in the fare in Belém (0.50%) on April 14, also including free fare on Sundays and holidays.
In regional terms, nine out of 11 places surveyed rose
In the regional analysis, nine IPCA-15 areas rose in April. The highest change was recorded in Porto Alegre (0.88%), due to the rise in tomatoes (61.16%) and gasoline (2.25%). In contrast, the lowest result occurred in Goiânia (-0.13%), which showed a drop in the prices of ethanol (7.60%) and gasoline (3.70%).

To calculate the IPCA-15, the methodology is the same as the one used for the IPCA; the difference lies in the period of price collection and in the geographic coverage. In order to estimate the IPCA-15, prices were collected from March 18 to April 14, 2025 (reference) and compared with those in effect from February 13 to March 17, 2025 (base).
The indicator refers to households with monthly income of 1 to 40 minimum wages and it encompasses the metropolitan areas of Rio de Janeiro, Porto Alegre, Belo Horizonte, Recife, São Paulo, Belém, Fortaleza, Salvador, Curitiba, besides Brasília and the municipality of Goiânia.
