The estimate for the Brazilian harvest of grains, cereals and legumes in 2022 is 278 million metric tons, according to the second forecast of the Systematic Survey of Agricultural Production (LSPA), released today (December 09) by the IBGE. This represents a new record in the time series started in 1975, with an increase of 10.0% compared to the 2020 crops and 2.7% compared to the previous forecast, which was 270.7 million metric tons.

“This increase in relation to the first forecast was due to the new field information about the new crop, with part of the projections being replaced. There was also an increase due to the weather, which has been favorable to the crops”, explains Mr. Carlos Barradas, manager of the survey.

The forecast is for a bumper crop of soybeans and corn, which should reach, respectively, 138.8 million and 109.4 million metric tons. For soybeans, the forecast increase compared to 2021 is 3.4% and for corn, 24.2%.

“This is a recovery in corn production. In 2021, we had a lot of weather problems, especially in the second crop. As the rains did not come sooner, soybeans planting and harvesting were delayed, narrowing the window for planting the second corn crop. In addition, the dry weather hampered production,” says Mr. Barradas. Altogether, in 2021, there were 15 million metric tons less corn compared to 2020, a decrease of 14.6%.

“For next year, the harvest is starting at the right time, and this will favor the 2nd corn crop planting window. In addition, corn 1st crop and soybeans, which have already been planted, are benefiting from the weather at the end of 2021, which is rainy”, adds Mr. Barradas.

2021 crops should reach 252.8 million metric tons, down 0.5%

The survey also released the November estimate for the 2021 crop, which reached 252.8 million metric tons, 0.5% lower than that obtained in 2020 (254.1 million metric tons), a decline of 1.4 million metric tons.

For the 2021 crop, the positive highlights were soybeans, with 134.3 million metric tons, an increase of 10.5% compared to 2020 and wheat, with 7.8 million metric tons and a 26% increase compared to the the previous year, in addition to the negative highlight of corn, which fell 14.6% with a production of 88.1 million metric tons.

According to the survey, Mato Grosso leads as the largest national producer of grains, with a participation of 28.3%, followed by Rio Grande do Sul (14.9%), Paraná (13.1%), Goiás (10.0 %), Mato Grosso do Sul (7.5%) and Minas Gerais (6.0%), which together accounted for 79.8% of the national total.

About LSPA

Implemented in November 1972 with the purpose of meeting users' demands for monthly statistical information, the LSPA provides estimates of planted area, harvested area, quantity produced and average yield of selected products based on criteria of economic and social importance for the country. It allows not only the monitoring of each investigated crop, from the planting intention stage to the end of harvest, in the reference calendar year, but also the forecast of the following year's crop, for which the survey is carried out in the months of October, November and December.
