After being closed for years, IBGE Library is reopened and offers visitors and researchers open access to its collection

The IBGE reopened, on Monday (25), the Isaac Kerstenetzky Library — Memory and technology Hub, a new facility at Palácio da Fazenda, downtown Rio de Janeiro. Closed since 2019, the place gathers books, dissertations, journals, photographs, maps an data collection instruments.
The library now offers open access to its collection, thus allowing users to browse the shelves and access the books directly. The facility also has a room for reading, an area for research and studies, desks with computers and a room with a sofa, which makes the space more modern and comfortable for officials, academic researchers, students of all grades and visitors in general.
Marcio Pochmann, president of the IBGE, remarks that it shows the importance of preserving memory. “The reconstitution of the Institute and the transfer of the publications to this place, with the recovery of old books and the establishment of partnerships, expresses the commitment of lookig ahead but keepong in mind where we come from. Besides being commited as in the past, that motivates us to keep on going, for that is what society expects from the IBGE.”
José Daniel Castro, Coordinator of Information Documentation and Dissemination, explains this is one more gift within the 90th anniversary celebration. “I thank the entire CDDI staff who worked in the opening of this facility, and reinforce the importance of books in a person's life, as well as in mine. Even in the Digital Age, people are more and more engaged in reading.”
The Coordinator of Customer Service and Information of the Center for Information Documentation and Dissemination (CDDI/COATI), Jeane Dezerto, thanked the team for their dedication. “Today is a moment to celebrate each one's efforts. I truly thank José Daniel and Marcio Pochmann for this opportunity of doing a job I enjoy very much. And I grateful to my team at the Library Customer Service (GEBIM), which is wonderful. And that team was really engaged in this relocation. I also thank Ângela Carnaval, for all the support she has given me.”

Gisele Rosa de Oliveira, manager of Library, Information and Memory (CDDI/COATI/GEBIM), explains that it is a great joy to reopen the facility for visitors. “It had been closed since 2019, so this is the restart of a welcoming space to receive the population. It was not a simple operation, but we are working here great responsibility.”
The director of Geosciences, Maria do Carmo Bueno, recalled this is a place for information dissemination. “Here we can share memory and knowledge. I hope the IBGE officials can make full use of it, and share ideas to attract the public here.”
Ângela Carnaval, Regional Superintendent of Administration of the Ministry of Management and Innovation in Public Services (MGI), recalled the arrival of the Institute to the Palácio da Fazenda building. “We are happy to have the IBGE here, I could learn a lot from that. I kept thinking about its main activity every ten years. But I found out that is not all. many surveys are conducted and the culture of the institute is inside me today."
Interactive map of 60 m² is launched at Casa Brasil IBGE
On the same day, the IBGE also launched a new interactive 60 m² map representing a recently released world map showing the richness of species and continents represented in real proportions. The map was launched during the launch of PINTEC at Casa Brasil IBGE.
Visitors can walk on the inverted map and interact with this element of information dissemination. this technological and scientific initiative will give the Institute the opportunity to intensify and strengthen relations with the entire school and academic community, visitors and the society.
