Between November 4 and 8, the coordinator of the IBGE's Thematic Commission on Gender, Ms. Daléa Soares Antunes, participated in the 22nd International Experts Meeting on Time Use and Unpaid Work and the 26th International Meeting on Gender Statistics (EIEG), both held in Mexico City and promoted by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), UN Women, the Mexican National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), and other regional partners.
The 22nd International Experts Meeting on Time Use and Unpaid Work was held on November 4, 2025, within the framework of the 26th International Meeting on Gender Statistics. Over the past two decades, Latin America and the Caribbean have been consolidating the study of time use as an essential field for understanding the social and economic dynamics of the region, as well as for highlighting the sexual division of labor and the unequal social organization of caretaking between women and men, recognized by ECLAC as one of the structural heart of gender inequality, as defined in the Montevideo Strategy (2016).
In this context, the coordinator of the IBGE's Thematic Commission on Gender presented recent advances in data collection on time use in Brazil, highlighting methodological improvements in the Continuous National Household Sample Survey (Continuous PNAD) and the light diary test of the Consumer Expenditure Survey (POF), which seeks to improve the measurement of daily paid and unpaid work activities in the country. During the event, it was also announced that Uruguay will be responsible for coordinating the next update of CAUTAL, the ECLAC's Classification of Time-Use Activities, a fundamental reference for the international comparability of data on time use and caretaking work in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Ms. Daléa Antunes explains that “the IBGE is committed to a cross-cutting perspective of women throughout all the Institute's production. In this sense, the initiative of the ECLAC's Gender Division to develop a toolbox that systematizes documents and productions with gender sensitivity throughout the region is fundamental. This effort offers us solid references and good practices that will strengthen our work and support the strategic role that gender analysis plays within the Institute.”

At the EIEG, two presentations were given by the coordinator: one on the theme "Women, Environment and Statistics," and another on the cross-cutting of gender in IBGE's statistical production, highlighting the actions developed to incorporate a gender perspective in a broad and integrated way in official statistics. "These meetings are fundamental for the IBGE to remain aligned with international best practices and strengthen the production of statistics sensitive to gender, territory, and diversity. They are spaces for technical cooperation, innovation, and recognition of the Institute's role in the regional equality agenda," Daléa emphasized.
During the events, central themes were discussed such as the economic valuation of domestic and caretaking work, the integration of intersectional and geographic data, political and digital violence against women, and initiatives for innovation in data and gender equality, including datathons and partnerships between national statistical offices, ministries, and women's mechanisms.
Representing Brazil were Camila Firmino, head of RASEAM and the Gender Information Observatory (OBIG), and the Executive Secretary of the Ministry of Women, Eutália Barbosa Rodrigues Naves.
The IBGE's participation reinforces the institution's commitment to producing and disseminating statistical and geoscientific information that contributes to the formulation of more equitable and sustainable public policies, as well as strengthening cooperation with international organizations in Latin America and the Caribbean.
