The IBGE was elected for the UN Statistical Commission, UNSC. It is responsible for supervising the activities conducted by the United Nations Statistical Division, UNSD as a functional Commission within the United Nations Economic and Social Council. The Institute had left the UNSC in 2024.
The election of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics for this important Commission takes place after the trip of President Márcio Pochmann to Nova York in the beginning of March, when the IBGE was responsible for organizing the Meeting of Heads of National Statistical Offices of BRICS Countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, United Arab Emirates and Ethiopia).
The success in this election is an accomplishment of the IBGE and confirms its relevance in the field of statistics. "The return of the Institute to the UM Statistical Commission results from international recognition o four leading role in this context, as since 2023, the IBGE has regained its position in global forums and advanced towards internal modernization,” said Pochmann. The IBGE will start as the Brazilian representative in the UNSC in 2026.
