Enrollment for the Brazil round of the International Statistical Literacy Poster Competition was delayed until March 31. Aiming at promoting statistical literacy in schools and universities, the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) will award the three best rated posters in each one out of four categories (A, B, C and D). The award varies between R$2,000.00 and R$3,500.00 for teachers and between R$1,000.00 and R$2,500.00 for students. Enrollment is free of charge and can be made through this link.

The announcement of the winners of the Brazil Round will be on April 7, 2025 on the IBGEeduca portal (educa.ibge.gov.br). The posters of the winners of the Brazilian round and other participating countries will be shown in the 65th ISI World Statistics Congress in the Hague, Netherlands, on October 5-9.

The theme of the competition is free and the poster should be simple and have a logical progression (it should contain an objective, an approach, the major results and the conclusions). Every information concerning the regulation is available here.

The competition aims at students of Primary Education, Secondary Education and Graduation. Groups from 1 to 5 students can participate, mentored by a teacher from Basic or Higher Education, which should enroll in one out of four categories: A - Initial Years of Primary Education (students aged between 9 and 11 years); B - Final Years of Primary Education (students aged between 12 and 15 years); C - Secondary Education (students aged between 16 and 18 years); and D - Postgraduate (Postgraduate students of any age).

Each category will be awarded. The three best rated posters of A, B, C and D categories will be classified in first, second and third positions, and the prize should be equally divided by the number of students enrolled in the group. The selection and evaluation of the posters will be carried out by a national commission of researchers with expertise in the area of Statistical Education, appointed by the Brazilian coordinator of the International Statistical Literacy Project.

The prize, in cash, will be divided in the A, B and C categories in: 1st position: prize of R$3,000.00 for the teacher and prize of R$2,000.00 for the students; 2nd position: prize of R$2,500.00 for the teacher and prize of R$1,500.00 for the students; 3rd position: prize of R$2,000.00 for the teacher and prize of R$1,000.00 for the students. In the D category, the prize will be divided in: 1st position: prize of R$3,500.00 for the teacher and prize of R$2,500.00 for the students; 2nd position: prize of R$3,000.00 for the teacher and prize of R$2,000.00 for the students; and 3rd position: prize of R$2,500.00 for the teacher and prize of R$1,500.00 for the students.

The Brazil round of the Competition is accomplished by the IBGE, through the National School of Statistical Sciences (ENCE), and by the Federal University of Rio Grande (FURG), through the Innovation Center in Statistical Education (ICE), and aims at promoting statistical literacy in schools and universities. The competition, which is part of the International Statistical Poster Competition and is promoted by the International Statistical Literacy Project (ISLP), is a project to encourage the statistical literacy from the International Association for Statistical Education (IASE), an association of the Internacional Statistical Institute (ISI).

Bianca Walsh, one of the Brazilian coordinators of ISI´s ISLP and an ENCE´s teacher and researcher, explains that posters promote the experience of living a statistical survey. "Inasmuch it invites students to do an investigation using either primary or secondary data, as well as it promotes skills that are in the National Curricular Common Base (BNCC), the competition is key for life, as it makes people think, take a decision and challenge misinformation and every type of information pollution with data and evidences."

"Promoting the Brazilian round of an international competition is an action that strengthens the IBGE as an influential actor in the global network of official statistics producers and in the development of good practices in the field of Statistical Sciences. On top of this, it also helps to fulfill the IBGE´s institutional mission of shaping citizens who know how to read the reality in order to wittingly act on the places they live," pointed out Marcos Balster, Manager of Education Affairs and Manager of IBGE Educa.
