Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics
The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) is a pivotal office in the production and analysis of data relative to Brazil, producing information that addresses several governmental sectors and the civil society. The IBGE has administrative autonomy and it is subordinate to the Ministry of Planning and Budget (MPO), with which it maintains a constant and productive dialog. As a result, the MPO and the IBGE inform the joint decision:
1. The MPO will support the IBGE, through the Annual Budget Act (LOA), in the formulation of the Census of Agriculture, Forestry and Aquaculture, one of the most relevant surveys of the IBGE, in terms of resources for 2025 (a schedule that involves training and hiring, among others).
2. They commonly agree to temporarily suspend the initiative of the IBGE´s Foundation to Support Technological and Scientific Innovation (IBGE+), a proposal supported by the MPO, for the institutional development and extension of the sources of resources to the IBGE. To face this challenge, alternative models are being mapped that might require legislative changes, which will require an open dialog with the National Congress. Therefore, the MPO and the IBGE clarify that any decision that might be taken will be discussed within the IBGE and with the Executive and Legislative.
As an additional institutional improvement, it should be added that the IBGE was recognized as a Science and Technology Institution (ICT) and, as such, it will develop its Innovation Policy, mandatory according to the Innovation Act for ICTs. To do this, an internal committee has been established comprising officers from all Directorates and members of Superintendencies.
