[Retratos] The role of home indicators

Among the several IBGE indicators, one stands out: durable goods in households. What does it mean to have a refrigerator, a cell phone or a washing machine? For demographic studies, a lot.

"Each durable good present at home represents a socioeconomic indicator," explains Maria Lúcia Vieira, analyst of the National Household Sample Survey (Pnad). "For example, television indicates access to information, the refrigerator marks health quality and the cell phone, nowadays, is the main means of family communication."

The washing machine is a very special indicator. According to Maria Lúcia, "the washing machine is considered an indicator of comfort, quality of life and time-use optimization. It allows the person, either being a single resident or a wife and mother, to carry out other activities. Historically, it is a symbol of female empowerment and is also related to the increase in the number of people living alone who need to optimize their time at home. "
