Influenced by the increases in electricity, gasoline and diesel, inflation rose from 0.22% to 0.40% in May. In the case of electricity, the rise was 3.53%, after the yellow flag was in force and also after the increases in seven capitals, reaching 18.53% in Belo Horizonte and 16.95% in Salvador.
The survey manager, Fernando Gonçalves, explains that Belo Horizonte had the biggest increase, but the impact was not felt yet because the new prices began to be valid on May 28, or near the end of the survey period. But in Salvador, which has experienced the increase since April 22, the rise in electricity was 18.45% - about 46 times higher than the general inflation in the country. As a result, the Housing group had the largest contribution to the increase in inflation (0.13 percentage points).
The highest individual impacts were recorded in gasoline (up 3.34%) and in airfares (-14.71%). Diesel oil rose 6.16% and, along with gasoline, this rise reflects the price increases at the refinery. However, with the truckers' strike and the 10% discount on the price of diesel as of May 24, the last collection period recorded lower prices. Ethanol maintained the drop of April (-2.73%), with prices on average 2.80% cheaper.
Survey starts to cover new locations
The IPCA data released today by the IBGE show that the highest index was with the metropolitan area of Salvador (1.11%) due to the 18.45% change in electricity, and the lowest index was in Brasília (0.15% %), due to the 13.91% drop in airfares.
As of May, the results of the IPCA will also be disclosed for the municipalities of Aracaju (SE), Rio Branco (AC) and São Luís (MA). As a result, there are 16 locations on the whole, increasing the representativeness of the North and Northeast in the calculation of the country's inflation.
