[Retratos] 2017: the year of agriculture

The weather helps and the Earth answers: with a production estimate of 240 million tonnes and increase of 30% in relation to the previous harvest, 2017 ended with record results in agriculture. Only for soybeans, corn and rice, the three main important products in the country, crops exceeded 255 million tonnes in 2017 (to have a basis for comparison, in 2016, the total grain production was 186 million tonnes). The effects are felt in a chain reaction: the good harvest increased the supply of products in the market and generated lower prices for the consumer, resulting in deflation; the soybean export reached record levels in comparison with 2016; in addition to that, the great productivity helped boost the participation of agriculture in the country’s GDP and reduce the impact of decreases in other sectors.
