Among other authorities, researchers and guests, the following ones were present: UNB Rector Rozana Reigota Naves, UNB Professor Leonardo Cavalcanti, who coordinates the Technical Cooperation Agreement for the International Migration Observatory (ACT OBMigra); Jean Uema, National Secretary of Justice of the Ministry of Justice; Eduardo Galdino da Silva, Federal Police Chief; Mariana Eugênia Almeida, Social Policy Analyst for the Undersecretariat of Statistics and Labor Studies, on behalf of the Ministry of Labor. The IBGE representatives were Gustavo Junger, director of Surveys, Bruno Perez, planning manager of the Population Census, Izabel Marri, manager of Demographic Dynamics Studies and Analyses, Marcio Minamiguchi, manager of Estimates and Projections, and Marla França and Marcelo Dantas, demographers.

When introducing the panel, Gustavo Junger highlighted the collaboration between IBGE and the agencies that make up the Technical Cooperation Agreement with OBMigra.

“I would like to emphasize that UNB is now also a meeting place for partner institutions: UNB, IBGE, the Ministry of Labor, the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Federal Police, within the scope of the Observatory of International Migrations ACT. This is a unique opportunity to thank colleagues from OBMigra, especially the researchers attending this event and the coordination, with special reference to professors Leonardo Calvacanti and Tadeu Oliveira, for their support in this dissemination here today.”

Mariana Eugênia Almeida highlighted the importance of the Observatory Cooperation Agreement for the formulation of public policies based on quality data. “OBMigra made an important effort to harmonize databases. Today we have information on monthly migration flows, with nationality information, made available on the Observatory portal.”

Eduardo Galdino da Silva stressed the importance of the Observatory for the Federal Police. “OBMigra is a very important agreement for us, based on the initiative of IBGE, UNB, through Professor Leonardo, and other agencies. The information we share enables the development of public policies and better service for migrants. As for international matters, the Federal Police is the one that provides this administrative service to assist immigrant populations.”

Jean Uema highlighted the importance of the information provided for the formulation of public policies. “To prevent the issue of migration from being politically exploited, distorted, and of generating hate speech against migrants, we need to build our policies and be prepared to confront this issue based on well-constructed, organized and well-founded public policies. To this end, the information provided here is essential.”

Rector Rozana Reigota Naves celebrated the information presented by the Census at the University of Brasília. “Our administration is very focused on developing policies based on data, and the contribution of today’s event to public policies at the national level is extremely important. We know how much Brazil has received from migrant and refugee flows in recent years, and this is a reality that requires special attention because it is a complex phenomenon, motivated by several realities. The release of Census data is extremely important because public policies must be built based on data and guided by a process of constant evaluation and updating.”

Representative of the Technical Coordination of the Population Census, Bruno Perez highlighted the work involved in the production and dissemination of the 2022 Census statistics.

“Today’s release helps explain some of the data that have already been released from the Census, helps us understand the population dynamics in the territory and provides a portrait of the country, all of which are essential information for formulating public policies. I would like to reiterate my gratitude to the demography team, which led this process from the development of the questionnaire, monitoring the tests and data collection, to the analysis that will be presented here today, with excellence. I would also like to thank the group of people who worked on the Population Census, a collective effort involving over 200,000 people, including permanent and temporary employees.”
