In July, the national output of industry recorded the fourth monthly increase in a row, with an index of 0.8%, according to the survey of Monthly Industrial Production, released today by the IBGE. The main positive influence came from the sector of food products (2.2%), with the increased production of sugar, benefited by the dry weather in most of the Central-South region. The bigger processing of sugarcane crops also influenced the production of alcohol, with impact on petroleum derivatives and biofuels.

According to André Macedo, manager of the survey, industry has experienced a moment of higher productive pace: “Although the positive moment will not recover the losses of the last two years, we now can see industry is on an upward trend”.

Macedo also highlights the overall profile of decrease, since the four categories of industry (capital goods, intermediate goods, durable consumer goods and semi and non-durable goods) recorded positive rates.  The researcher alerts, however, to the low basis for comparison, still low, considering the decrease of 8.4% in the period January-July 2016. “In spite of the recent improvement, industry is a segment yet to be recovered”.
