Decree no. 87,497, of August 18, 1982, provides students with the opportunity to participate in social, professional and cultural learning activities in real life and labor situations, as well as establishes the Trainee Day. At the IBGE, 611 trainees – 70% of higher education and 30% of secondary education – work in areas like geography, statistics, administration, education, history, engineering, economy, communication and systems analysis, contributing to the production of statistical and geographic information.

The Executive Directorate concentrates most trainees (110), followed by the Directorates of Geosciences (71) and Data Processing (42). The regional distribution shows 59.2% of these students in the Southeast Region, 18.3% in the Northeast, 10.8% in the Central-West, 9.6% in the North and 2.1% in the South. Among the Federation Units, the Federal District ( 33), Bahia (19) and Rio de Janeiro (18) also have most of the trainees.

Andréa Rodrigues, supervisor of traineeship, stresses that traineeship is a monitored education action, developed in the workplace and aiming at preparing the student for the labor market. "The opportunity of having trainees in our staff benefits both the students and the IBGE servants, as traineeship is a period in which the students can contribute to the work routines, at the same time that they develop technical and behavior expertise needed in their future profession", stated her.

Attending the second year of the secondary level, Vitor Gabriel Rodrigues is a trainee at the IBGE´s Department of Provisioning and Monitoring of Human Resources. He highlights that the interaction with the servants, the friendly atmosphere of the workplace and the respect and valorization with which he is treated are the most important points of the traineeship.

Trainee in Psychology, Jéssica Ferreira tells that as the IBGE exempts from previous experience in her area, it encouraged her to apply for the program. Now working in the recruitment of new trainees, she felt that her shyness posed some difficulty during the recruitment process, but the permanent orientation of the supervisor helped her to gain confidence. For Jéssica, "it is very important that students pass through a professional traineeship, because here is where they will actually learn how to behave in a professional way, how to carry out a particular work and how to proceed in a challenging situation".

According to Bruno Malheiros, coordinator of Human Resources, working with trainees in several areas is of fundamental importance, as they support a lot the daily work. "We value the trainee activities and provide training and qualification, as well as the supervision of a professional in the area he/she works."
