Regardless of growth, volume of services drops since January 2015

In the seasonally-adjusted series, volume of services rendered in Brazil grew 1% in April compared with March, the biggest growth since March 2016, when it hit 1.2%. Without seasonal adjustment, it dropped 5.6% compared with April 2016, following the retractions of 5.2% in March and 5.3% in February. Except for March 2015, when it rose 2.3%, the sector has been losing in all months since January 2015.

The positive rate in April over March was due to the segment of Transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing, which increased 1.0% in the seasonally-adjusted series. The segments of Information and communication services and Other services fell 0.2% and 5.8%, respectively, and the special aggregate of Tourism activities declined 2.0% over the immediately previous month. The segments of Services rendered to families and Professional, administrative and complementary services remained stable. Considering these figures, the cumulative rate in the year stayed at -4.9% and, in 12 months, at -5.0%.

In the seasonally-unadjusted series, the analysis of the results by activity in relation to April 2016 pointed out that all the segments registered negative changes in volume, mainly Other services (-16.4%) and Professional, administrative and complementary services (-11.4%). In the first four months of the year, the cumulative figures recorded the biggest drops in the segments of Other services (-11.3%) and Professional, administrative and complementary services (-9.9%). Of the cumulative figures in 12 months, the segment of Transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing posted the biggest drop (-6.7%), followed by Professional, administrative and complementary services (-6.6%). The segment of Technical-professional services stood out in this context, as it has been registering expressive retreats, due to the low demand from the industrial sector and from the governments.
