Conversely, transportation (-0.1%) showed the only negative rate in February 2025, after having fallen 1.8% in January.

The quarterly moving average was 0.1% in the quarter ended in February 2025, compared to the previous month. Among the sectors, in the seasonally adjusted series, the slightly positive behavior of the services sector was sustained by only one activity: information and communication (1.2%). Three other sectors showed a decline: transportation (-0.5%), services rendered to families (-0.3%) and professional, administrative and complementary services (-0.1%). On the other hand, other services (0.0%) remained stable.

Compared to February 2024, the volume of services increased by 4.2%, its eleventh positive rate in a row. This month's result was followed by all five activities and also included growth in 63.3% of the 166 types of services investigated.

Among the sectors, information and communication (9.8%) had the main positive impact, driven mainly by increased revenue from portals, content providers and other information services on the internet; software development and licensing; telecommunications; information technology consulting; and data processing, application service providers and internet hosting services.

The other increases came from professional, administrative and complementary services (4.3%), transportation, support services for transportation and mailing (2.4%), other services (0.4%) and services rendered to families (0.1%), explained, to a large extent, by higher revenue from business intermediation in general through applications or e-commerce platforms; business management consulting; general cleaning; and engineering services, in the first sector; air passenger transportation; port and terminal management; inland cargo navigation; and cargo logistics, in the second; securities brokerages; collection of non-hazardous waste from domestic, urban and industrial sources; and administration of exchanges and organized over-the-counter markets, in the third; and restaurants and catering services, in the last one.

The cumulative index for the year, compared to the same period of the previous year, was 2.6%, with four of the five activities recording positive rates and growth in 59.0% of the 166 types of services investigated. Among the sectors, the most important positive contribution was from the information and communication sector (7.9%), driven largely by the increase in revenues of companies operating in the segments of portals, content providers and other information services on the internet; telecommunications; software development and licensing; development of computer programs on demand; and information technology consulting.

The other advances came from professional, administrative and complementary services (2.2%), transportation, support services for transportation and mailing (0.9%) and services rendered to families (0.6%), explained mainly by the increase in revenues of companies of business intermediation in general through applications or e-commerce platforms; organization, promotion and management of fairs, congresses, conventions; engineering services; general cleaning; and business management consultancy, in the first sector; air passenger transportation; port and terminal management; and cargo logistics, in the second; and restaurants, in the last.

On the other hand, other services (-1.4%) exerted the only negative influence, pressured, to a large extent, by the lower revenue from support activities for financial services; fund management by contract or commission; repair and maintenance of computers and peripheral equipment; and credit card management.

IBGE updates seasonal adjustment methods for short-term surveys

The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) will update the parameters of the seasonal adjustment methods for the Monthly Survey of Industry: Physical Production (PIM-PF) Brazil, Monthly Survey of Industry: Regional Physical Production (PIM-PF), Monthly Survey of Trade (PMC) and Monthly Survey of Services (PMS).

This is a routine procedure, last performed in April 2022, with the aim of incorporating the available data from the most recent periods. The statistical modeling applied makes it possible to remove seasonal and calendar effects from the time series of these surveys, which does not imply any change in the original data.

The full technical and methodological notes for each survey can be accessed here. For more information on Seasonal Adjustment of Time Series, click here. The results of the update of the seasonal adjustment methods will be made available on the date each survey is released: Monthly Survey of Industry (PIM) Brazil - April 2, at 9 am; Regional Monthly Survey of Industry (PIM)  - April 8, at 9 am; Monthly Survey of Trade (PMC)  - April 9, at 9 am; Monthly Survey of Services (PMS) - April 10, at 9 am.
