The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) was honored this Monday afternoon (8), in a Solemn Act held at the Legislative Assembly of the State of São Paulo (Alesp), in celebration of the Institution's 90th anniversary. The ceremony brought together parliamentarians, civil servants, and guests to highlight the Institute's contribution to the production of statistical and geographic information in the country.
Proponent of the tribute, state congressman Paulo Reis (PT) highlighted the importance of the work carried out by the IBGE for understanding the Brazilian reality and for formulating public policies. "The IBGE does something that seems simple, but is fundamental: showing who we are, where we are and how we live. When the IBGE carries out a Census, it is telling every Brazilian that their existence matters. A fairer country begins with knowledge of reality so that it can be transformed", he stated.
Representing the IBGE in São Paulo, state superintendent Francisco Garrido Barcia highlighted the role played by the Institution's workers throughout its history. "Portraying Brazil with information necessary for knowledge of its reality and the exercise of citizenship is a permanent challenge in a country of continental dimensions and marked by great diversity. It is a work that requires continuous dedication and is only possible thanks to the commitment of all the IBGE collaborators", he highlighted.
Representing the newly arrived IBGE servants, Marcelo Vegi, who joined through the Unified National Public Competition (CPNU) in 2025, emphasized the responsibility of the new generations in continuing the work developed by the Institute. “It is important to recognize those who built the credibility of the IBGE over these nine decades, often facing technological, institutional, and financial challenges. It is now up to the new generation to honor this legacy and contribute to ensuring that the Institution continues to be recognized for its technical excellence, independence, and relevance to the country,” he said.
The ceremony was conducted by the civil servant and geographer Paulo Gaudio and was attended by parliamentarians, advisors, and civil servnats. During the event, an institutional video was also shown in honor of IBGE's anniversary, celebrated on May 29th.
Tributes in other states
In addition to São Paulo, the IBGE has already received honors in solemn sessions held in the legislative assemblies of Rio Grande do Norte, Paraná, Pará, and Sergipe. The celebrations are part of the national program commemorating the Institution's 90th anniversary, which will continue throughout the coming months.
