The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) released, this Tuesday (30), the official calendar of the publications for 2026, the year in which the institution celebrates its 90th anniversary. According to the president of the IBGE, Marcio Pochmann, the document is a “central instrument of transparency, predictability and institutional strengthening of the country's statistical and geoscientific production”.
According to Mr. Pochmann, the previous announcement of the dates and themes of the publications guarantees equality in access to information, protects the technical autonomy of the Institute and reinforces the data credibility before society, the market, scholars and public policy makers. “In addition, it allows for adequate planning by governments, companies, researchers and the press itself, contributing to evidence-based decisions and to the deepening of qualified public debate,” he highlighted.
The president emphasized that, in a scenario of growing demand for reliable and timely information, the calendar reaffirms IBGE's commitment to international best practices, to the informational sovereignty of the Brazilian State, and to the strengthening of democracy through public access to statistical and geoscientific knowledge.
The Directorate of Geosciences (DGC) releases several strategic products scheduled for 2026, dedicating efforts to delivering information to society that characterizes our territory, as stated by director Maria do Carmo Bueno.
“As a highlight, we can mention the new printed edition of the Milton Santos National Atlas, a collection of maps, with geographical analyses, showing the natural, economic, and social conditions of Brazil,” and she added: “IBGE will carry out the annual update of products related to the Brazilian Territorial Division, such as the Digital Municipal Mesh, Territorial Areas, and Toponymic Changes, among others.”
She also highlighted the methodological and conceptual update of the Land Use and Cover Mapping, aiming to provide more accurate, harmonized, and detailed information on the transformations of the Brazilian territory, using higher-resolution satellite images and a revised classification structure.
As part of the tasks related to the densification of the Brazilian Geodetic System, the IBGE will continue updating the Geodetic Database (BDG) with information from Geodetic and Gravimetric Stations.
Gustavo Junger, Director of Surveys (DPE), reinforced that the publication of the 2026 release calendar is a demonstration of IBGE's commitment to transparency, providing predictability to different actors in society regarding public access to statistics and economic and social indicators crucial for decision-making in the country.
“Among the household surveys, in addition to the recurring releases of the Continuous National Household Sample Survey (Continuous PNAD), it is worth highlighting the completion of the releases of the 2022 Population Census, as well as the first releases of the 2024/2025 FConsumer Expenditure Survey and the 2023/2024 National Survey on Demography and Health. The social area will also include the releases of the 2024 National Survey of School Health Survey and the National Survey of Basic Sanitation. In turn, Demography will make available the Complete Life Tables for Brazil 2025 among the products to be released in 2026,” he added.
In the Economic area, Vladimir Miranda, Deputy Director of the DPE, highlighted the following: “The 2026 publication calendar includes the release of fundamental economic indicators for the country. It shows the entire schedule for the release of cyclical indicators, such as price indices for different segments, monthly business surveys, and statistics produced by surveys of the agricultural sector. The schedule also includes structural and thematic business surveys and additional sector information derived from the Central Register of Enterpirses. The calendar also includes the dates for the indicators to be produced by the System of National Accounts for this year, while the system's database reformulation is underway.”
