IBGE will lead statistical institutes of BRICS in 2025

The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) participated, in the city of Kazan, in Russia, on October 28 and 29, in a meeting that gathered preidents of statistical offices from nine BRICS member countries, a body formed by Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, so far, and that has included Egypt, Ethiopia, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Iran since 2024.

The meeting of National Statistical Offices of the group was held after the 16thof statistics for the planning and development of member countries, based on a perspective from the global south, explained the president of the IBGE, Marcio Pochmann.

“With a full schedule, the two-day event in the city of Kazan, was an opportunity for dialogues opened with the technical cooperation of the IBGE with statistical offices from the global South that currently account for more than 70% of the economic, occupational and income-based dynamism, thus opening a new perspective that reflect the reality of the Global South," said Pochmann.

According to the Kazan Declaration, the leaders of BRICS highlight the importance of data, of statistics and of information for better decision making, and expressed support to the improvement of statistical cooperation in the realm of the BRICS and of the BRICS Joint Statistical Publication Snapshot, as well as the interchange of better practices in the area of official statistics in BRICS member countries. 

“In summary, a huge contribution to the role of Statistical Offices, seen as strategic elements in the strengthening of a new world order based on relationships between countries for development ang global security,” said the president of the IBGE.

At the end of the event, the IBGE proposal of activities for 2025 were presented to the audience, as Brazil will assume the temporary leadership of the group.
